7MGE Jap Import testing Sat, 28 February 2004 07:36 Go to next message
Hey Guys,
I've just bought a 7MGE jap import engine from Jap Performance in Sydney. The oil looks OK and it seemes to have resonable compression when hand cranked. The rocker covers have been leaking which suprises me with an engine thats supposedly done 90,000 k's (engine been thrashed?) I don't want to bung it in and find out its nasty secrets. Does anybody know of any tests that can be done before I put the engine in? Also another engine I looked at was cleaner looking, but had rust build up in the top engine cooling hose from not using coolant, was I right in dismissing this engine? Thanks for any advice.

It's a bit of a lottery. Most places don't comp check them anymore but it's certainly something you can do. I usually also check the condition of the oil filler cap and try to sneak a peak at the engine internals thru the filler hole to see if there is any oil sludge buildup. Obviously avoid those that do as it indicates a lack of servicing. Also make sure it spins over. A friend travelled to another state to pick up an expensive engine from a reputable engine importer only to find it was siezed!

The freshest 7MGE will be more than 10 years old. Whilst it is out of the car I would change front and rear main oil seals and also the timing belt.

As I am sure you are aware, 7Ms are well known for being a little suspect in the head gasket department. I would tension up the head bolts as part of the the pre-fitment freshen up.

Pay no attention to the kilometers, buy purely on condition.

Don't worry too much about cam cover leaks, Toyotas are notorious for it - often the cam cover bolts just come loose over time! Oh, and if your 7M has rocker covers, it's not a 7M Wink

My engine is a rare example of toyotas experiments with the 7MGRE or "retro" line of motors....well, back in my day they were called rocker covers damn it, and I still only understand miles per gallon!! Leave me to my senile mumblings. Very Happy

In Response to the Reply that reads SSS Automotive test all engines before dismanlting the car, i know of another importing company who do engines ,gearboxes, etc they also used to test the engine in the cae aswell, but nearly all the 7M engines would arrive with a blown head gasket? T
hey do blow all the time !

Before I put any import 7M engine into a car I pull the head and replace the gasket. Also repace all the engine lines as they like to blow out too.
Of course buy purely on condition.
Even though the engine may have been tested before being shipped over here there is a lot that can happen between there and here.
Remamber the engines have to be washed for customs too and I have been caught out getting water in the import engines thanks to the brains in customs filling them up. The engines then sit in the importers yard for unknown time and get no attention while sitting there rusting away.
It is purely hit and miss when it comes to import engines.
