c56 gearbox bellhousing is the same as a c52 one. (easy to get) why do you need a c series bellhousing??

Its not the same.
It swaps the started motor over to the intake side of the engine.. you cant use the standard 20v extractors with starter mounted on the exhaust side.

bellhousing IS the same. the c52 and c56 are the same casting - it has 2 "ears" - you can mount the starter on either side of the block. only the c50 has the one starter position.

Have you guys heard of a 4A gearbox having 2 "ears" for the starter motor ?
I've just pulled apart a 4A out of an AE82 and the gearbox has two ears not one. As far as I am aware the gearbox hasn't been replaced.

c50 has one ear. c52+ has 2 - unless caating plant was running short of bellhousings? (or it has been changed)

I'm pretty sure it is the original gearbox but I suppose nothing is certain these days. I was using the box yesterday to see if I had a 20v gearbox as well and the 1st gear ratios are definitely different - haven't compared the other ratios yet (which I believe should be the same).
In first gear the AE82 box requires about 13.6 turns of the input shaft to get one turn of the driveshaft and this other box requires about 14.4 turns. (Decimal places are from a visual estimate so not completely accurate.) I'm trying to find out the final drive ratio of the boxes which I'm hoping are slightly different as the rotations above don't calculate back to give the same final ratio.
So to make it short, looks like one is C50 and one is C52 but both have two ears for whatever reason. The "condition" of the aluminium on the C50 box and it's bell housing looks the same.

hmm... the ratio in all box past the AE92 SX are all the same, it's just the final drives that differ... have homologation papers stating this. Abaddon, what you want is the plate between the engine & box, also the Starter motor from a 4AFE as they can't just be swapped over the other side.... Give me a message next week as I'm not 100% sure there's one living in my workshop, but I'm Have a clean up this weekend, so I should know more then.

well, Toyota would be in trouble with the FIA as the C52 and C56 are listed with same ratios, different drives for the model listed on that link... want a copy?

Wouldn't mind a copy to have a look at, thanks.
Can you e-mail it to pthird@bigpond.net.au or do you need a fax number ?
I can confirm that my two gearboxes have different first gear ratios so I'm fairly comfortable that I have a C50 and a C52, even though both have two ears.
Will have access to a C56 on the weekend so will check that out too if I get a chance.
If Toyota has the same ratio's listed then there must be some other significant reason for changing the model number. I've noticed that the C50 is a lot easier to turn than the C52 but I don't know if that's due to wear-for-age or heavier components. I might weigh the boxes to see if there is any great difference.

Considering the date of his post, and the fact we haven't seen him on the forums for a while, I don't think he'll mind?!!!
