How do I know I have an LSD?

G'day. I have been reading about Soarer LSD's with auto Soarers and from what i've read they are as rare as hens teeth. I think I have one but am not sure. How can you tell? If I ever spin the wheels it seems to alwyas make 2 black marks on the road. I got my car really cheap and I would be guessing any cheap Soarer wouldn't have an LSD. The car was in perfect condition too so I didn't get it cheap because of the condition. Can I look on the diff and read numbers or anything for info?
Thanks.

i'm pretty sure that if you jack up the back end and spin one wheel in one direction the other wheel should spin in the opposite direction.

lsd = both wheels should turn the same way
non lsd = both turn opposite ways

i dont know if this works for all toyota's.. but on my car the dif code... if its say f292 its a open diff.. but f243 or something its
lsd
the alst number on the code designates
so 2=open diff.. 3=lsd...

The codes are different on the later cars like the Soarer, Its no longer the 2,3,4,5 that denote LSD or not, but an "A" or "B".
Unfortunately I cant remember right at this moment which one is which

Plus, if it's a Torsen LSD, you won't necessarily tell by jacking up the rear wheels...
More importantly, you SHOULD be able to tell by driving the car!

Most people are just optimistic and repeat the crap the last owner told them about the vehicle. They go around telling everyone within earshot that their car has LSD, Brembo brakes, Landcruiser brakes, TRD suspension, high flowed turbo, cams, and G-Redy exhaust. They are too scared to actualy look under their vehicle, untill a mechanic finnaly comes along and gives the sad news about how its all stock standard.
"What!, I'm sure it had LSD, thats what the guy told me".
"But it does 2 wheel cooks!"

this isnt entirely correct, especially if its a ZZ30 soarer as they come with a torsen LSD. a torsen will act like a single spinner if u test using this method as it is a multiplying diff.

FWIW when I installed my torsen diff it behaved exactly like a locker; if I turned one wheel the other wheel would turn in the same direction. If I locked one wheel I couldn't physically turn the other wheel at all, and yes the gearbox was in neutral. I'm not sure if all torsens behave like this but mine certainly does!

Why don't you just give it a boot on some gravel or loose dirt and you should be able to tell...

My MA61 has an LSD ('cos it has laid 2 bits of rubber a few times), but it is on the worn side as I can turn one wheel and the other turns the other way (the car has done 255,000km though ).
Needless to say a Torsen will be on the way in the future, but for now the std unit will get a nip & tuck to tighten it up a little

Look at the build plate under the bonnet.
Read the line that says TRANS/AXLE.
- A340E is your auto gearbox
- A02A is non-LSD/A02B is Torsen LSD.

is it an LSD? park your car with one wheel on the road and one wheel on the grass/dirt ect place your left foot on the brake pedal and your right foot on the gas pedal,
if it is not an LSD then the wheel on the grass "loose surface" will be the only one that spins.
if LSD both wheels will spin. regardles of LSD type
not that hard to check and will only take a second.
