icon5.gif  MA61 ~ 5M Alternatives? Mon, 01 March 2004 21:32 Go to next message
Hey All,

I have used the search function and can't find anything on it.

Anyway last night I reduced the 5M-E and now is running on 4 cylinders.

On a tight budget, should I look and recondition the whole engine or look at swapping the engine for a more "efficient" motor and do that up? ie. 5MGE, 7MGE?

Anyway ideas in what should I do?

Cheers.

Hmmm,

Bugger. I can think of three options.

#1 : El Cheapo - buy another asthmatic 5M-E and make dio until you can save the biccies for option 2.

#2 : Good Fun - Fit the 7M-GTE/1JZ-GTE/2JZ-GTE and do it properly.

#3 : Too hard - just about anything else

Good luck

I have been toying with the idea of using a 7M motor. Now, how complicated is it to impliment a 7M to a stock as a bone 5M-E? ie. wires, mounts, RWC etc...

I know about 7M's syntoms of BHG. But its better then with the 5M for power.

Cheers.

See if you can find a 6M-GE, it's a great upgrade from the 5M-E and it's a direct bolt-in. You can even run it off the original 5M-E electronics; I had exactly such a setup in my MA61 for about 3 years.

If you can't find a 6M-GE, a 7M-GE is also a good option although wiring it up is a little more complicated. If you're on a budget and not afraid of getting your hands dirty, these options are the way to go!

Norbie,

Is the air-conditioning compressor compatiable with the 6/7MGE from the 5M-E or does it mean I have to go and buy another compressor? Confused

Cheers.

The compressor is slightly different on the 6M-GE and totally different on the 7M-GE. The engines almost always come with a compressor though so don't worry. Smile

Although I don't know all of the specifics of the 7M-GTE conversion, I'm happy to bring my baby around if you want to have a sticky-beak at how it fits in and the sorts of things you'll need to do (provided you're in Sydney!).
