Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum and have read a few post about cars being impounded and defected.
Does anyone know they actually laws on being impounded and defected? Cos it looks like cops can give you a fine for anything, and these days its easier just to cop it on the chin.

depends what state you are in.
In qld.
1st offence = 2 days
2nd offence = 3 months
3rd offence = confiscated for good.
There haven't been many 2nd offences and no 3rd offences that i know of.
It should also be known that you don't actually have to be caught in the act. The laws say if the cop has a 'reasonable suspicion' then they can take your car. So if the cop is being a REAL dickhead then they could take the car if they have some dirt on you.
What the laws don't say is, what 'hooning' actually is? It seems to have vastly different meanings between the cops and the media. So...? Don't race, do burnouts etc. and you should be fine.

You can also get your car impounded for a major defect.
e.g. new motor with no engineer cert. approval and not swapping engine numbers over etc.

So what laws protect us from f**kup coppers.
If they want to piss you off or they've had a bad day, they can just make up some crap and impound your car!!
Cos my friend got his car impounded for drag racing. They took it for 6 months and he lost his licence. He protested the impounding of his car based on the fact that it is registered under his brothers name. This was his first offense too. I thought it is only 2 days for your first offense
