Is $80 for a resonator fitted ok ?

Will it affect performance or will they just quieten the car down ?

i've got one it just quietens the exaust down its still the same diameter as the exaust (ie 2 1/2")

shut the cops up anyway

i doubt there would be any loss of power

changes exhaust note, probably some loss of power, but doubt it would be overly drastic

so it should quieten it down somewhat ?

my engine is supercharged, hence i am wondering if a resonator would restrict flow...

but as u said, prob not too drastic...

any other comments ?

a resonator is basically a small straight through muffler.
will be a little restriction, but not too much, though i could be wrong.

how well it works depends on the design.
most have a straight tube thru the middle with holes in it.

if the holes have been punched then bent (if you know what i mean) then it depend son the direction the bent bits face. if they face into the exhaust flow, the gas will get pushed into the packing material and is no good. if the bent bits face away from the gas flow, it will do sfa.

afaik, better resonators have many small holes drilled, so they allow sound absorption, but do not hinder the gas flow, so it's similar in restriction to a straight thru pipe.

i have 2 on my car, both are made by ESA (exhaust systems australia?) and cost $25 each (supplied) from "aus best muffler and tyre". $80 fitted sound sok for the labour involved possibly?

the idea is to cancel some of the amplitude in the exhaust by reflecting sound waves back onto themselves (destructive resonance?)

a coupel of resonators and a large chambered reverse flow muffler will make almost any car quiet. if you size the chambers and pipes right, the restriction is not that much of a worry.

.. and thanks stewart for the words ..

i guess if i am not happy with the sound, i can tell the shop to change it until it sounds right, yeah ?

well, it's really hard for exhaust shops, as they don't know what will satisfy you in the sound department Wink they have a legal obligation to keep you under the decibel limits tho..

have a good chat with them about what you want, and ask to have a look at the resonator first, and also ask what they recommend. i found the head guy at "Aus best" to be really helpful, even tho i was just buying bits to weld up myself. i would recommend at least giving them a call.. http://www.tyres.com/exhaust.cfm

my exhaust system was cheap (welded myself) but the 2 2" resonators were $25, adn the 2" reverse flow muffler was $50.. cheap as shit, but they sound great, and don't attract attention. being 2" on a 1.3L (8000rpm) motor means it still flows ok. but it's always a balance between restriction and noise, and sound..

a tip tho, if you have 3 significantly differently sized things in the exhaust (like cat, resonator, and decent muffler. none of this straight thru shite Wink ) then they will cut out different parts of the exhaust noise, and give the perception of lowerr volume.
