Buying a sub $15000 Soarer Mon, 12 August 2002 11:20 Go to next message
What is with these cars?? Other than motors (I think i have a handle on the JZ.)

What goes wrong with soarers? What do i have to look out for when buying one?

Some of these cars are not much over $10000.

I think htere is some prblem with the trick adjustable suspension, that can cost more than the car is worth to repair.

soarer guys can you confirm this ?

I think the TT standard units have conventional style suspension.

Apparently they have the same struts, A-arms and IRS setup as JZA80's

True about the TT's, they come with standard coil spring suspenion (some with TEMS which are just fancy adjustable shockers) - fancy suspension are found on the airbagged V8s and Active V8s which can lead to problems but offer luxurious ride quality. The Actives are particularly sought after for their rarity - only 800 odd ever made and they showcased what hydraulic computer-controller suspenion could do in a production car. Outhandles a TT in the twisty bits without raising a sweat.
The cheap ones tend to need some TLC to bring them up to grade but are a bargain if you don't mind a bit of DIY.
Just usual wear items like suspenion arms, electronics that fail (dash especially), EMV (TV) Screens that fail, fuel pump ECUs that fail, A/C solenoid failure. All problems are readily fixed and most are common across the Toyota range of the same era.
Parts are readily available new or used and are reaonably priced for Toyota parts.
The cars are heavy - 1600 to 1700 kgs, so off the mark the 1J breathes deeply to get her going but still manages very impressive 0-100km/hr and 0-400m times of ~6/13. They are deceptively quick and surprise many a Rex/HSV/Lancer on the road.
Autos are common and accounted for 99% of the TT sales - whilst being less lavishly equipped, manual Soarer command a premium and are highly sought after by enthusiasts.
Mountains of info is available on the ALSC and LSOC sites and their members sites.
Floorpan is common with the JZA80 so just about all suspenion components are interchangeable.

The car is not for me!! A mate has seen them and thinks for the money, he cannot go past one.

His options are: VS commode or soarer Hmmmm i wonder???

He loves DIY and I have heaps of spares.

We'll have to start checking them out

I bought mine 2 weeks ago today! <see pic to the left>

Awesome car to drive, mine has standard coil springs with some kind of electronic adjustment that stiffens them when in pwr mode. Nothing particularily complex though.

These things really move.

Its true there are a few things that can go wrong with them..... The dash will stop working, depending on the age. Costs $3 to fix if you can use a soldering iron.... $30 if you can't.

My heater control solenoid is shot but its interchangable with other toyota/lexus ones. And my parcel shelf brake light needs some toying with.

But if you want these things to really fly just buy a second hand boost controler and AFC from an importer and have them tuned on a dyno and you'll never get the grin off your face. Laughing

I bought mine about 3 1/2 years ago. I imported it myself with the help of a friend over in Japan. It was a 92 2.5 TT. At the time it cost me about $12,000 for the car, but by the time it was on the road after a few stuff ups it cost a total of $24,500. At the time i was looking at one in Melb almost identical for $39,000, so i saved quite a bit. I have a good friend now who imports cars and compliances, and he is getting 2 more in a week which he is selling for around $13,000 complianced.

Unfortunatly i have treated mine like absolute shit over the 3 years. I've done 130,000 (its just about to hit 200,000 now) and only taken it for 3 services in the whole time. I havnt had any major problems with it except for a little bit of black smoke and rough idle when cold recently, and lots of cracks in the door trims (I actually completly broke one, so im getting a new one this week). My heater has also stopped working on 2 ocasions( ??? any ideas here???) I had a sorta accident once, where i lost it and slammed into the gutter on a corner, jumped over it slammed the inside of the other 2 wheels and then ended up in the street that runs into it. I completly chewed that set of wheels ( half of the inside rim just snapped off one of the wheels ), but everything else was fine surprisingly. They are a completly solid car and as comfortable as anything.

mine is a 91 2.5TT

I paid $16K for it with trade in of my banged up 88 model Celica.

Its in excellent condition, just clocked up 100K Km's.

I also have the same problem with the heater, found a half cut at a Jap Importer in Kirrawee yesterday and they wanted $95 for the actuator that is needed to fix it. Better than the $570 they want at Toyota but I'm gunna see if I can find better

Mines velour. I always thought that the 2.5TT models never came with leather, but apparently you could get them. As far as i know there are 2 different types of seats. The limited models have these little lines running all over the seats (which are fully electric i think), woodgrain and headrests on the rear seats. Mine doesnt have the wood grain, and plainer looking seats (which i actually think look a lot better) and not electric except for a little button which controls the backrest i think (not too sure about this, havnt used the button in ages). Some have the cd player, stacker in the boot and sub on the parcel shelf, where as mine didnt have the sub, and only a tape player. Not sure if those were for the limited models, or options across all versions.

All have the nicest climate control i've ever used (damn that heater is good in winter!!) and some have the extra little readout thingy on the dash, which mine doesnt have.

There were some other things that my model doesnt have which again im not sure if they were only for the limited model or options on any model. These include traction control, TEMS suspension, ABS, sunroof, a little ugly (in my opinion) light antennae thingy which as far as i know is to help measure the distance between the car and objects.

The thing you need to replace to get the heater working is a little actuator/solenoid up near the passanger side firewall.

This is a picture of it from the Lexusclub.co.uk website

http://www.jkwebdesign.net/acatalog/heatervalve.jpg

I enquired at a Toyota Parts dealer and they wanted $570 for it!
A local jap wrecker had one out of a 92 soarer and they wanted $95.

Idea I've heard that late model Aussie Rola's use the same part so I'm going to go to a wrecker and offer them $10 for one. I'll let you know if it fits/fixes the problem.

It's the heater control solenoid and is a common fault in many toyota's in the last 15 years - esp MKIII/MKIV Supra's and Soarers - for more info http://members.optushome.com.au/tsoarer/Fixes/heat er%20fix1.pdf
