4AGE Flywheel bolts Mon, 12 August 2002 12:16 Go to next message
before i fit my new flywheel (thanks michael) and clutch, i'd like to get hold of some new flywheel bolts. i know that Toyota is a good option for new OE bolts, but i'd prefer to go one better while i'm at it...

i've tried contacting ARP to find out if they have a solution to their seemingly useless 6 bolt kit (need Cool. i have not yet heard back from them. has anyone ever found out about this, and if so where can i source them? if ARP is a no go, is there any other options i should look at???

go to a bolt shop and ask for their highest grade high tensile bolts and see what they come up with or contact a performance auto shop or speak to an engineer about the options.

dori i'd stick with the original toyota problems, never ever heard of them letting go - dab of locktite on the end and they'll be as reliable as ever!

yeah - i'd use the factory ones. (can be re-used safely at least once) certainly be wary of using some unknowm type from a bolt place - jut think of what will happen if the flywheel gets loose at 8k rpm!!

alright, i'll stick with OE bolts. BTW, anyone know what they are worh new from toyota? as for loctite on the bolts, i thought this was a bad idea, especailly with bolts such as flywheel, etc.

definately use loctite you dont want the bolts vibrating loose and dropping the flywheel. i think i may have heard somewhere that if a few bolts fall out you can sheer the rest of them off which wouldnt be a very good option in my opinion. when i put my flywheel back on i used blue locktie which is just a basic thread locker that allows bolts to be undone with a bit of extra force than normal. whatever you do dont use red loctite as this is stud locker and if you ever need to take the flywheel off again it will be a HUUUUGE job. and probably require a lot of heat to loosen the loctite.

Re: 4AGE Flywheel bolts Tue, 13 August 2002 12:37 Go to previous messageGo to next message
To use Loctite properly, you have to put in all the bolts, up to about 20ft-lbs, then one-by-one undo them and put a little Loctite on the clean threads and a little oil under the head of the bolt, then do it up to the required torque.
Then move to the next bolt.
The reason is that a lot of people often use too much Loctite, and it'll soak into the surface between the flywheel & crank flange. That film will eventually crumble, and so let the flywheel move around a tiny bit, which can eventually cause the bolts to fail.
Only a drop of Loctite is needed!

serious 4age racers (this is from phil ryall) do not use locktite - they use araldite - not so much to lock the bolt in, but to fill up the gap around the threads on the bolt - so that the flywheel cannot move - therefore it cannot work to bolts loose.

could youp lease explain a little better what you mean about the flywheel moving due to the gap in the threads. which direction of movement are you referring to?

keep in mind this is not a serious engine, infact mostly stock. and all i plan to have is a bullet proof setup. is this totally necessary, or even reccomended for a street car, driven daily?

Re: 4AGE Flywheel bolts Wed, 14 August 2002 00:45 Go to previous messageGo to next message
as the bolts are not an interferance fit there is a gap between the threads and the hole in the fywheel, allowing a small amount of radial movement. the araldite fills the gap stopping this.

if it is a street motor i would just use locktite - or not even bother - unless you are consistantly revving it to 8k+ rpm, there really is no benifit.
