Corona backfiring through exhaust!

hey all
last night i was up to some hooliganism on a quiet back road at about 1am. anyway, i was holding gears and letting the engine in my rt104 corona rev a bit, nothing extreme, just letting it live a little in 1st and 2nd.
I stopped my car at a car park, and turned it off (i drove normally for about 2 min before turning it off). when i came back out to hop in the car, it had been sitting for a couple of hours, and i then proceded to drive off. when i let the clutch out, it made the weirdest niose i have ever heard. it was clearly an air noise, but i didn't know where from.
I pulled over onto the side of the road, popped the bonnet and listened for any unusual noise from under the bonnet, but it sounded faint. i then went around the back and the sound level grew, it sounded like something was loose in the exhaust system.
My frinds and i piled back into the car and i slowly drove it the 800m to my g/f place, where i got the keys for her car and took my mates home. when i got back (about 2am) i grabbed a torch and had a look under the back of the car. i couldn't hear anything... so i gave it a little rev... nothing in the way of unusual noises... a bigger rev.... nothing!
WTF is going on? any ideas as to what happened and why would be greatly appreciaed
btw, the car runs genie 4-2-1 headers, 2 1/4in exhaust sustem, a sports muffler and a 15in resonator, if that is any help

Update: it has happened again!!
but, this time i have a better idea about wtf is going on!
at idol: no problem
at part throttle: popping sound through exhaust
at moderate throttle: backfire through exhaust
my thoughts: something is up preventing dettonation of the fuel, BUT the timing was set about 1 month ago, the plugs were changed then too. so, any thoughts??

Does the car miss, as in, is there a sudden drop in power and jolt through the driveline? Or is it a noise that seems to have no ill effect on the engine?
Is this is neutral or in gear (under load)
If there is no ill effect from the noiuse could it be possible you ripped a small hole in the muffler, or rattled the xtractors slightly loose, this will let o^2 into the exhaust and let excess fuel pop and burn..
If you did change the points also a month ago, points need to be adjustst about a week after installing because the fresh rubbing block contact area has to wear in, which it probably has, causeinbg the dwell angle/timing to change. This would also explain a loss in power/missfire.
Does it happen all the time now? When cold? When warm? etc..
Try those out, but otherwise give us some more info!!

you know how, sometimes stuff goes wrong, and you are so worried that it is the end of the engine/car/world that you don't even check the simple things....
the spark plug lead to no1 cylinder was broken (where it grips the top of the plug). didn't even think to check that.
ah well, thanks for all your help guys. turns out it wasn't the end of the world anyway.
