Jack,
Every early Hiace I found in WA ran an F series axle, so while you could use it for the width, its the availability of good ratio LSD's that steered me away from these and onto RN10/13/20/27 Hilux G series units.
Full marks to JCMF as well !
Cheers,
Mitch.

I'm hoping that some Hiaces have G series centers cause I have a center here from one and it fits my hilux diff fine

I don't doubt that some G's found there way onto Hiace's but I have only (personally) seen F's on them. Maybe the LWD diesel Hiace van ran a G series.....I don't know enough about them to say which year/model/series etc.
Like with all old parts, best to eyeball it and satisfy yourself.
You don't find much of a build plate in 1970-74 Toyota commercials....

Late 70's (78-79) onwards Hiaces definitely have G series diffs. The build plate is found below the passenger seat. Peel off the vinyl and there it is.
That said, I can't comment specifically on earlier Hiaces.

I found the late 70's Hiace axles to be too wide to use under the rear of my RA23, so I hunted down a pair of RN25/27 axles.
I looked at 3 early 70's Hiaces and while one (the earliest) had no build plate, the details on the other two showed they were F series. I found that RN10/12 Hilux's don't have much of a build plate at all.

Quite right. The later Hiace diffs (78-79 onwards) are very wide, from memory something like 1570mm hubface to hubface.

GT is correct, late 70's onwards have G series in Hiace's, diffs are same as hilux. You may be thinking of LiteAce vans, they have F series and not as wide, great for your application shane.

I'm almost certain the Liteace has an E series diff, apart from the Liteace 4WD, which I'm led to believe is another source for F series LSDs.

GT covered it, yes, E series diff's in Liteace's, an F series LSD in the 4WD second hand import Liteace, with a 4.3 ratio BTW, on the one I eyeballed in Perth 18 months ago.
Unless the Hiace was a 4WD or limited edition or diesel turbo or some other oddball combination, you won't find it with an LSD.
All said and done, its easier to hunt down/wait for and buy an RN10/13/25/27 Hilux and use that G series axle, and swap in a later model LSD.
Been there, done that, taken me 3 years and $500 all up, but worth it.

Just interested in the floating hub idea, LSD's are available so that was just a question.
Floating hubs can be engineered to accept wider wheels than the standard variety. They are also a lot more robust. I am putting in a F series axle in my 28 mainly because I don't want too much extra unsprung weight. Only problem is that the axles aren't all that big in em. Floating hubs also restrain the wheel if you brake an axle.

I've never seen a Hiace with factory LSD apart from late-model stuff which is G-series. I've seen a few 4WD Liteace's with F series LSD's though.
If you want an F series rear end, don't worry about whether or not it comes with an LSD centre, just get one that fits relatively easily; you can always swap in an LSD centre later, which is an easy process with these diffs. Same goes for the G series.

just getting back to what I was asking before,
my dilemma is that I cant find any short hilux axles; ie rn1X or rn2X model hilux. I need these axles because I have the 1410mm hilux diff in mycar which is a tad too wide, going to shorten it with the shorter model axles, cos too expensive to use the ones I already have. I have hunted around Sydney and posted on the wanted section and asked friends etc.. so what I needed to know was what my options are.
Are there any other axles I can use that will be the same length as the 1370 mm hilux axles and that will fit into my current diff. It doesnt matter if the axles are even a bit horter that the ones found in a 1370mm diff.
Also can anyone tell me what length axles are out of the 1370mm diff?

690mm(+/-1mm). From hub face to axle end.

I am in the middle of doing my hilux diff conversion in my RA28 I did alot of searching and found that the diff out of those 4wd hilux surfs (cant remember what exact model some late 80's early 90's 4wd shitheap with no rear doors) is the same width as the standard RA28 diff dont have exact measurements on me but is pretty narrow. The only downside is that they are 6 stud instead of 5 which would have been more preferable to me. Hope this is of some help.
