Adjusting rear brake bias... Thu, 04 March 2004 08:20 Go to next message
Atm my rear brakes lockup wayyy before my fronts (not a good thing Rolling Eyes)...

I was planning to fit an adjustment valve just after the flexible line going to the live axle (thought it would be the easiest spot...).

Where can I get an adjustable valve (I did have a look in the yellow pages and rang a few brake places which weren't much help Confused)? Are there any cars that come with them from the factory, or can I say goto enzed and get one (if so what type is good?)? btw I can fabricate the fittings to match my existing lines so thats not a major problem I hope...

Cheers
Wilbo

In case of you having stock brakes, I'd check leaks and bleeded front brakes.

Hiace's and hilux's have carriage proportion valve in rear brake circuit. Does anybody know would this be modifyable for "better" purpose. How does thís valve work.

Other thing to do is to get a proportioning valve from any decent speed shop like Revolution.

Costs anywhere from $100 up.

Like Jayem said tho', are the brakes std ? What have you done to cause this imbalance if anything ?

Cheers

What sort of car ?
Corollas have a proportioning valve as part of the brake master cylinder assembly. Can you use a Rolla master cylinder ?

Is this a new thing?

Check front brakes firstly. Then make sure the front suspension isn't diving excessively under braking.

My first port of call when my brakes aren't working properly wouldn't be to make the ones that are working less effective!! Very Happy

I have SA63 struts (and hence hubs / calipers) in the front with MA61 kings lows (with revalved std shocks), also there isn't a brake leak.

I have a feeling that the SA63 master cyl may be bigger than the MX62 one and hence I am not pushing enough fluid to make the fronts work enough before the rears lock....if I reduce the pressure to the rears I'll be able to set the fronts up to have more of an influence...

Does the extra info help? Cool

Cheers

I think the sensible approach would be to use a M/C to match your calipers. Get an SA63 M/C if you have rear drums or MA61 M/C if you have rear discs.

OK, so we're talking about a slightly modified setup. That helps a lot. Laughing

What is the diameter of the SA63 caliper pistons vis a vis the MX62 caliper pistons? If the SA63 pistons are bigger, then you will need more pedal travel to adequately activate the front - this may result in the backs locking up as line pressure still increases as before. Like Norbie said, best bet is to replace the master cylinder with an SA63 unit. If you still have rear brake lockup issues, I'd rekit the calipers and make sure they are 100% OK. Then I might consider an adjustable proprtioning valve.

Yep yep, I'll be getting back the sa63 master cyl and putting it in during the week. Hopefully that will fix the problem Rolling Eyes as GT suggested, I'll rekit the front brakes as well later on.

Thanks for the help guys Smile
