project car!!!

planning to do up a MR (maybe motorbike engine) starlet(hopefully a road legal one)
i was reading some mini mags, and people has done MR motor bike mini......
I really want to do up a starlet with the engine at the back!!
First idea
a motorbike engine is compact, there are 2 main problems
1 it is designed to drive chain
2 it doesn't have reverse gear
and heaps of other problems, speedo , techo , gearlikeage........etc,etc.
i reckon the easiest way to solve the first problem is let the chain drive the car.so we need a custom shafts and connect them to the bike sprocket.
for the reverse gear I reckon some bike touring bike does actually has reverse motor , it sound a bit doggy but hopefully it will let the car reverse.
Second idea
i get a MR2 half cut and try to fit everything in to the starlet. Life is so much easier than doing a bike conversion
tell me what you think

road legal?? methinks changing position of engine from frotn to mid constitutes an ICV, and you'll be hard pressed to get ti road legal... find a very good engineer and have a long chat...
the starlet, while light, is not bike light.. i wouldn't want to be trying to drive even a 500kg car with a chain drive!!!
MR2 gear into starlet? you'd need to redisng to whole rear end of car. soudns liek a fascinating project, but doubtful for road legal.... good luck!
i think a 4A starlet would be enough fun if it's not, whacon a turbo and hold on

cozb,
As someone who is building a mid-engined car (tube frame clubman style with silvertop 4A-GE) I have to agree with Stewart here. Mods of that extent to a Starlet will make it into an ICV which means it becomes a 2004 model and needs to comply with ADR79/01 emmissions regs etc. That makes the bike engine a no-no almost immediately. There's some guys in Sydney who have succesfully got Hayabusa engines certified for registration in a PRB clubman. My understanding is that exercise cost at least $20,000 per car over and above the cost of putting in the usual silvertop or blacktop.
For that matter, even the 20-valves are doubtful now for ICV's, depending on which state you're in and how friendly your engineer is I'm not saying it can't be done, but it definitely can't be done cheaply. Maybe choosing a current drivetrain (2ZZ-GE anyone?) would simplify the emmissions aspect. ZZ motors are alloy block too => nice and light which is always a good thing in something the size of the Starlet.
Bottom line? If you want to do it, go for it. But, speak to an engineer first and find out what will be needed to get it approved for the road. If you go ahead with it, keep us informed
Best regards,
Dominic

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Actually I know it won't be done cheap!
I know something like this would be a long project and even if i can build the car up getting it on the road would be so much harder................
talk to a good mate who work in ford as an engineer, he thinks the idea is good, but it will involve so many custom parts
and if i need to get that road legal it has to pass the Australian Design Rule!
chat with some guys in the uni SAE formula team, they have built some mid engine SAE car............and they are willing to help me out.
I don't mind using some current drive-line, what i really what is a mid engine hatch ( i Have seen so many of them and can't wait to have my own).....
I think the first problem is how do i mount the engine at the back of the driver seat...my idea is mounting it on a custom roll-cage...
One last thing. I won't start the project until I am sure I will get that finish. It is to bad to start something and then not finish it.

where have you seen all of these mid-engine hatches?, the only factory one i can think of was the renault R5 turbo, i guess if they are custom built thats another thing.
you're project does intrigue me however...good luck.

go to
http://turborick.com/video/
download any of the 313 files, and also the Vesco458...
the 313 is a hayabusa turbo powered land speed car (the red sled looking thing), max speed to date is around 330mph and has about 620hp.. and is also powered by Megasquirt
for high powered busas, go to http://turborick.com
9 seconds?? GOOGLE FFS
NiGZ, i know you are young and have difficulty searching, but 2 line posts just waste badnwidth.

thanks for all the information
i know the Z car do bike engine car mini and tiger
and Dupsport has done all sort of golf mid engine twin engine etc...I will keep on starching
mini with V12 sounds cool but i have got no $$ for the V12 engine and time for the work.
up to now right now I have found 2 engineers and some engineering student to back me up...this is the good thing to study engineering.
after talking them i think i would pick up a car engine but not a bike engine, because we don't want to play around with the reverse gear and the car engine would have abit more torque.
I know I have the support from the right people and the project will be done in a matter of time.

"Saabs (96, 99, 90, 900) have chain drive and Saabs weight about 1700kg."
And a 900 front cut fits directly into a fiat uno back end making a cheap mid engined car .. with four wheel steer if you want ..

now it is the time to design the car
Old school Vs Cheap hatch!!!!
As I really want to keep the cost low.
These are the cars that I like
Celica TA22
KE30 corolla
Austin A30
mini
Honda City
Swift
Charade
I like the celica TA22 and austin A30, but it is kinda hard to fit the engine at the rear, and the most important thing is a TA22 with a good body is hard to find.
If i get a reasonable shell how much will the body work and paint cost me?

OK,
Since you seem serious about this here's another possible source of info. There was a limited production (1 proto and 6 production) version of the Ford Festiva in the US - the same one we had here, a rebadged Mazda 121. They took a Taurus SHO V6 drivetrain (3.0 24v 164kW), wedged it in the back and called it the SHOgun. Do a Google on 'festiva shogun' and you'll get plenty of hits. The best one for your purposes is probably http://www.fordfestiva.com/gallery/grassroots_fest iva_shogun.htm which shows the buildup of a replica.

Hah!!! How much have you got? This is a 'how long is a piece of string' question. There is no answer.

i have heard of it
thanks for the link
and right now I have got like around $10k
I am ready to spend some more money on this projects
I know for such a project 10 grand is nothing, the z car tiger are more than AU$35k right?
since i haven't gotten so much money to spend I would have to spent it wisely.
As choosing the car is really the first thing i have to do I really want to know what people think about the cars?
I am ready to spend around 6k for the car alone!

well with 10k, you could buy a lot of mind altering substances that would prolong the dream-like state you appear to me to be in,
4k wont really stretch too far when you are talking complete driveline customisation of a car,
hey, you might be able to get an 86 and chuck a 4age in it.
if you have lots of time and enthusiasm, have a project in your head, and you dont have all the money to complete it, you'll only ever produce verrrry second rate results.if you want to learn start small, then work up, that way you dont have 10k tied up in something that may not be finnished and hence worth sweet f.a. if you decide/have to sell it,believe me these things can happen.
on another note,i think the time period at which your friends can tell you to piss off after abusing their "taxi service" is about 4 weeks( good mates!!).
