MA61 to 7MGE is it worth it?

Hey All,
My 5ME has blown 2 oil rings and don't know if it is worth fixing it? I don't even know how much it would cost after having the heads reconditioned. Does anyone know how much would it be do do a general overhall of the whole engine with rings, pistons, gaskets and bearings. My alternator has died so that needs to be replaced as well.
Next questions is, "Is it worth finding/getting a 7MGE?", how much labour is it invloved to get it converted? does anyone know who can do it? etc...
I don't know. For a 20 year old car I just don't know the options.
Cheers.

M series engines are notoriously expensive to rebuild.
I rebuilt a 5M(T)E. Parts and machining alone could have set me back over $1200. The price includes chemical clean, bore, hone, decked block, machine crank (all journals) and installation of new auxillary shaft bearings. I also got the same place to recondition the head (and while they were at it to fit larger exhaust valves). I picked up things like 5ME pistons/rings for $20 at clearout sales as a student, but expect to pay at least $300 for a set nowadays. Bearings (thrust, main and big end) will set you back around $140. The killers are the gasket set (roughly $300 - I got mine as a student years ago for $10) and the auxillary shaft bearings (only from Toyota and about $70). Should the oil pump gears be outside tolerance, then pay $130 per gear new from Toyota. I also spent $130 for a balance. I built the engine so I paid $0 for assembly (effectively blueprinted), but you would expect to pay $5-600 for that fun. Then add another $4-600 for installation and you end up with a grand total of $2500-3000. And you end up with a new 5ME. Big woopee!

Rebuilding a 7MGE will cost you about the same amount and the result is significantly better (chat to Ed about his) but it will require some wiring work.
Or you could do a 7MGTE/1JZ/2JZ conversion.

Thanks GT for that, I hoped you would reply with an insight.
I have decided to take the car off the road completely and store it and save up my pennies to bring it on the road (A long time now since I have switched jobs ). The prices of a rebuild kit are a killer now (from autostores). So till then...
Cheers.

Thanks for the price list Black, only problem is that I have no assistance in wiring up/mounting a 2JZ in my MA61 since there is no one in the area I know that would help me.
I may end up just shelling out bucket loads of money to get the 5ME running once again...
Cheers

Ok,your 5me has stuffed oil rings!...Are your bores ok?...You
may just be able to get away with honing and re-ringing the engine.I`m sure there would be some people from melbourne who would help you out....This will work out pretty cheap and you get to keep your MA61 stock(which i believe you want?)...
If your 5me, is beyond worth while repair,THEN look at your options...6/7M - 1/2JZ ...etc
cheers.

As well as comparing costs of 5ME and 7ME (that's assuming 7MGTE, 1JZGTE, 2JZGTE, 1UZFE, etc. are all out of you price range and/or personal skill level), don't forget about the good old 6MGE. Or maybe even 2JZGE? If you find one in reasonable nick, you'll end up with extra power, non-FI insurance rates, reliability and a relatively easy conversion at a reasonable cost.
When my 5ME started to die (after previous owner had thrown over $3K in the last 2 years at it), I saw that as my excuse to start the performance project! Of course, for the money spent so far, I could have done a 6 month round the world hoilday!
