i dont know if i'd go to the effort with an ST, for practically the same price you could get an SX with the nicer interior and power everything? Not really a consideration if you just want to go fast i guess...

0 to 100 in about 8 seconds, soft launch (to preserve dying CV's).

Car is running crap lately, could barely break 17 seconds quarter mile on the g-tech yesterday. Sad Usually gets under 16 easy~

If you dont mind not having the extra creature comforts then i'd probably go for the ST. If you're planning to fix it up and sell it it'd be a win - 3SFE's are dirt cheap!

Re: ST162 dedicated thread Sat, 24 September 2005 06:41 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I have a question about 3s gearboxs.

I'm trying to get a caldina beams halfcut from japan to convert my friends st162 to a beams.

I have already put one of these beams engines into an aw11 mr2 and that whent pretty smooth. As far as i can tell all the same applies to putting this into a st162 celica, except for the gearbox where the gear selector levers are on the other side of the box. (mr2 box)

So what i'm asking is if there is a suitable LSD gearbox that will go onto a fwd 3s engine and work with the existing celica st162 gear selector cables. Would something like the gearbox off a celica st202 be compatible? or anything else?

You can make the GT4 box work in a FWD celica, but from what i've heard its a lot more time and effort than its worth in the end. Ask wiso about it, I'm pretty sure he welded up the transfer case, modded his crossmember and is running the GT4 box in his GT2.

For lengthy discussion on ST202 gearboxes check out my member's rides thread:

thanx smashed wombat. Sounds as if the only real option is a gt4 box, this can't be right.

What gearbox do you have on your gen3? is this an lsd gearbox that comes standard on st202 celica's (na gen3 motors)

AH! ok looks like the box that comes with the st202 is the box i would need.

Infact looks like a caldina halfcut isn't the one to go for but a beams equipped st202. Altho they must be alot rarer and also more expensive then a caldina beams cut.

Did you sort out what Gearbox too use on your gen3 st162 conversion wombat?

a celica or camry box should hold the beams power i know they have a fair amount of power but its n/a power know what i mean haha... the gt4 box isnt impossible , modify the x member and get a plate made up etc... track down a new camry 5sp box bulletproof and wack a aftermarket lsd in it

Re: ST162 dedicated thread Sun, 25 September 2005 10:05 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I'm running a ST202 S54 gearbox.

Although the S54 gearboxes found in Celicas are externally identical to those found in the camry, the boxes that are fitted to 3SGE engines have a lower final drive ratio for faster acceleration. A camry gearbox behind a 3SGE would be p00. They're fine for turboed cars as the extra power down low offsets the disadvantage of a high final drive ratio.

ST202's (all types - beams AND gen 3) come with two types of gearbox AFAIK.

S54: Non LSD

- E(1)53: 80% sure has LSD when found in a ST202 = same as those found in 4AGE blacktop, 4AGZE and some MR-2 halfcuts. Bigger, tougher gearbox - but not a direct bolt-in into a ST162 as the mounts, shift cable retainer, input and output splines are bigger (requiring a mix and match driveshaft setup).

Hope this helps. It probably doesn't make much sense - :S

On the topic of gearboxes,

I have to change my gearbox & cluch soon, I have a fair idea on what has to happen, and I have a haynes, but yeah...:

Hoise engine, remove driveshafts, crossmember, remove gearbox, change cluch, then reverse...

Just trying to get the heads up on any potental problems I might have, or any other suggestions on things I should do with the gearbox out?

doobs, get the flywheel machined if it has grooves in it, and while you have the flywheel off, it would be a good idea to check the oil seal and replace that if it needs it as well.

drainer of a day today Rolling Eyes drove around looking for wheels (yes again).

Not only did I find some that I liked but they were the right size and everything. Down side is that apparently they won't import a set of four they only import orders of 100+ wheels. Does anyone else think that's strange?

So I kept looking, found some more and were told they wouldn't import just for one person again.

How exactly do people do business if they don't stock rims taht fit wrx's? I suppose wrx's are already 16x7 wheels.... Maybe I'm going to have to get 17's. Sad

I guess I'm just annoyed because I don't understand how they can offer wheels and then allow the distributors to determine whether or not they get sold. Sad

If anyone knows somewhere in victoria that will import/find wheels that have been requested please tell me.

I was just wondering what size rims are the best fit under a celica. Also is the rumor true that wrx mags fit celicas? By the way here is a pic of my car. It is an 1986 Celica SX with custom made extractors, walker hot dog, Genie turbo muffler and stainless piping.

Hot colour Smiley =

I like 16"'s on the ST162, 17"'s are okay, but are mostly for show. Toyota fitted 16"'s on the ST205 and the ZZE Celica ZR, if you want to get a cheap set, track down some of those.

Cycleofabuse has the Celica ZR rims on his ST162 (same colour as ours Smiley = and they look really good. I've seen them go as cheap as $400 for 4.

So, here's the enkei's that I wish to import but apprently they only import them in orders of 100......... still seems like a load of crap, or poor business but anyway.

They are proportionate and that's how it should look with king lows and 17's... btw these wheels only weigh around 7kg's for 17" size... And yes the car looks pink... I couldn't get it to go darker in photoshop Confused

http://img306.imageshack.us/img306/5876/img18811dl.jpg
The car is gettin a respray in about 3 weeks so i thought "why not have some fun and see what looks good."

Personally i like it, Its a bit "MATT" but yeah if i decide to keep it when i do the respray it will be in proper "gloss black"

The rims were a bit too hard to keep clean so they are now black, more of a racy look!!!

New Name for my car "RED PANDA 162"
And if anyone asks, YES there is Red Pandas,

Charlie: Those wheels are available locally, the Australian distributor is YHI. Any decent wheel shop should be able to get them for you. Try somewhere like Donellan's in Box Hill, or The Tyre Factory (as much as I don't recommend them Razz )

adrian that looks mad, but i still like it as it was before,

talking to the mechanic that did the celica on fullboost.com, he says i can get 240fwkw with same turbo but changing the rear turbine (or sumfing similar)

well he has done one 12sec fwd gt2, hopefully in 1.5 years i can get one too

TRD....

Dude.......The black bonnet ia solely restricted to people who have Carbon Fibre or at least fibreglass bonnets'
and thats only because they look tough with the CF material look, and are a little harder to paint coz of the shiny glossy stuff.
I laugh loudly and think weird thoughts at those who paint an otherwise perfect bonnet matt black..."just because"
I'm with Karl.....ur car looks good all Red Cool

Its gettin a bit much replying to this sort of answer, Carbon Fibre is for people who much rather spend $400-$1000 on making their bonnet lighter (which isn't that heavy anyway) instead of going to the Gym and loosing the weight if they are that worried..

Its a look i'm after, which is what car enthusiasm is all about, opinions and everything are great, but yeah i've mentioned it a couple of times now but yeah my bonnet WILL be a GLOSS FINISH and at the moment is a TEMPORARY IDEA to figure out what to do with the paint, hardly worth sittin there for half a day perfecting the bonnet, spraying it in gloss black (from the gun) using a bucketload of thinners to then realise ur not keen on the look..

Its a trial thing, I'm actually doin stuff on the car myself which is heaps better than just giving the car to a spray shop or a mechanic to do engine work,

Its all about personal opinions yes, but its hardly fair to hold it against someone for accepting opinions but taking on their own ideas!

Jonchai, where are the pics of your car mate, we did some serious post whoring to get to the next page so you didnt post them on the same page as Adrain a couple of weeks back. come on mate, i spend a good 3 hours packing those parts, now show us some pics Razz

i don't think the black bonnet looks that bad, i just dont like the wheels in black Adrian, they look like steelies mate. itching for some spinner hubcaps. Razz ,they looked like they stuck out more when they were white, it like an illusion i spose.

Karl

nah....been slack sorry guyz......i had a full week to do something about it and i havent.....tmrw's a nice day in Adelaide so i might bring the Celica out for a shoot.

goodthings take time remember. and even then, the bonnet pins still arent on, and the car is now officially nekid. its missing the entire boot area + sparewheel, glovebox and door panels so there wont be any interior shots either

oh and Karl......i'll be needing a few more small bits and pieces if u have...will PM soon
