Thought i better check the plugs when i changed my leads and found that it has Denso K20PR-U11 plugs in it.
I dont know much about Denso plugs but cant find them listed for the 4age anywhere.
What plugs do people usually run?
Just wondering why my motor has these.

Your motor has those because they are the ones that toyota use at service intervals. They actually come in a toyota box, but are manufactured by Denso.
They are quite well priced from toyota for platinum plugs, far better than the price you'll get from the local parts store.

Mine are denso aswell I think. The platinum plugs are pretty expensive. I read somewher that the GEs use platinum whereas the 4AFEs etc use just standard plugs. When I first got my car I took it to a decent mechanic (got timing belt done), he also had a look at the spark plugs while I was there and showed me the electrode. The electrode came to almost a point (like a little cone), he said the platinums last for ages and these don't need replacement. Check yours, if the electrode is rounded then they will need replacement (check for colour and deposits aswell). If they look alright I wouldn't bother replacing (I've done 50 000km on mine and they weren't new when I got the car, and they're still going strong)
At the bottom of this webpage you can see typical electrodes, the platinum is one of the 4 shown:

they look like normal plugs i just wondered why they have used this part number & not the one listed for 4age.
The motor runs fine, sparkplugs are a good color & dont look very old

What they're not platinum plugs? I guess if the gap is correct then they should be fine. I don't think you have to set the gap on platinum plugs, but standard ones you do. Don't quote me.

yeah everythings fine i was just curious to see why different plugs were in it.
I couldnt find any specs on denso plugs to see if the are a different heat range or something.
NGK are heaps easier to work out

My mistake, sorry, I misread the plug code as PK20PR-U11, which would be platinums.
Strange that yours does not have platinums, but I guess its up to the person that replaced them last to choose whatever they want.

why not? I'm sure we'd love to hear it for the 100th time!
So what does the manual recommend for the RWD motor? I thought they were still platinums.

Is it a TVIS blue top or a red top TVIS (i.e. writing colour)
I've heard Blue top = 86kw and red is 88.
Not starting anything

i'd say the paint was gone from the cam covers a long time ago.
Its an original JDM RWD engine, leads say 83

Q20R-U11 vs K20PR-U11
K & Q plugs are interchangeable, they both have the same thread diameter & reach, so no problem there.
R is a normal resistor plug, PR is a resistor plug with a projected insulator nose, hardly any difference, can cause smoother running at idle with the PR (in theory)
And obviously the gap is the same on both at 1.1mm, and they both have a "U" grooved centre electrode.
So no drama really. Your car has just been fitted with a compatible alternative plug, you shouldn't be able to notice any difference.
But if you're replacing them, i'd highly recommend the PQ16R platinum plugs, they last forever, and are harder to foul.
Cheers
Phil
