My TVIS doesnt seem to be working & from what ive found in searches the solenoid should have power at low revs to allow vacuum to keep the flaps shut.

I tested voltage at the connector & there isnt any.

I had a look at the manual & it says voltage hould be present above 5000rpm, this is opposite to how i understand it to work.

Can someone tell me if they have voltage at idle etc?

sorry bmak don't know. Have you checked fault codes. 4400 rpm is where the "flaps" open I've read a few places. I thought the flaps were shut normally and then above 4400rpm the solenoid opens the flaps?? Maybe the manual is saying 5000rpm just to give some leway. I would think the manual would be correct. Anyone with more first hand experience with the TVIS butterflies

The tvis stays closed/partly closed till a certain rpm (around 4500rpm) to improve low rpm torque, then it opens,

The vacumm is there to open them, not keep them closed.

Start the car, let it warm, the give it some curry, you will here the engine note change when the tvis opens, or just look under the hood and rev the motor from the throttle body, look under the manifold and you will see the rod move, if the rod isnt visable stick your hand up there.

If the tvis wasnt working properly the car would find it hard to rev higher in the rev range.

Hope it helps?

When the motor is running it will do the same thing.

When you hit a certain rpm the solenoid will activate the vacumm tank(big round cylinder, i cant think of the name of it) that pushes the butterflies open?

This is how i understand the tvis to work, i was stairing and thinking hard when i put my motor together as to how it works and this is what i have come to.

If im wrong someone please tell me?

with no vacuum at the actuator the butterflys should be shut - if you rip the whole TVIS hardware off the car (requires removing whole intake), you'll see a spring that holds them closed.

there's a 'resevoir' of vacuum for the actuator as it need a bit of force to overcome the spring tension. it also provides vacuum for when you WOT the engine at 5k and the valves try to stay open with manifold vacuum near zero.

i just rechecked the manifold off an AE82

They are definantly open with no vacuum & close when vacuum is applied.

Is my RWD manifold opposite?

but they close when vacuum is applied

I'll have a closer a look at that manifold & the RWD 1 on my car tomorrow

When not installed in the car my butterflies where closed, i remember holding them open to get a good spray of carby cleaner to clean the bastards.

Cut myself twice?

If the vacumm closes the butterflies, then what opens them.

I checked both the AE82 manifold & the RWD on my car today and they both have them open with no vacuum.

This makes sense as with full throttle held long enough there wouldnt be enough vacuum to hold them open anyway.

no vacume = closed solenoid and TVIS switched off under 4200-4500rpm, vacume builds in the resivior tank under the manifold, after switching rpm power is applied to the solenoid and opens the vacume from the resivoir to the actuator and opens the butterflys above 4500rpm.

vacume comes from the plenium so theres plenty there at high rpm.

maybe your vacume lines are around the wrong way?

so what keeps them closed when there is no vacuum?

just think opposite of everything i just said.. went and double checked a set i had laying around... open with NO vacume.. would have taken a pic but battery was flat in the camera

oh and the diagphram is spring loaded , thats what keeps them open

good i wasnt going crazy:)

i found this topic that shows its not the 1st time you have been confused on the system:)
http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=12253&rid=196&S=e38c5ee3eae0a0fc9f474249 d2188423&pl_view=&start=0#msg_98670

Anyway that means that my ECU should be giving 12 volts to the switch at low revs which it isnt:(
