engine problem.....radiator? advice/help pls Mon, 08 March 2004 08:59 Go to next message
Gday guys,
Was wondering if any one oculd help me with a problem i had today with my car engine (seca sx, 4A-GE)

On saturday i noticed the engine was leaking some coolant, it wasnt anything big, so i didnt really worry about ut.
Was driving to uni this afternoon, my car temp guage was at max, and the oil reading was down to 1/4 full. previous to that 20 or so mins, when i was at the woden lights near the hospital idling, the engine revs kept fluctuatiing and dropping, it kept bumping between 1500 and 2000 RPM.

Got to school and parked my car there, went back to it a couple of hours later and checked the radiator, it was empty, the excess coolant tub thingo was full. I bought a bottle of coolant from BP and filled up the radiator, drove home through woden again and the temp guage kept fkn around, it went up to max, stayed there for a minute, then dropped down back to halfway. it did this quite a few times on the way home

i'm guessing somethings wrong with the radiator or something, maybe the fan - but that was running when i left the car idling at home. anybody know what my engine problem is, or anyone had the same thing happen?

i'm in a position where i need my car everyday, so if its something i can fix tonight or tomorrow morning, then great, otherwise ill have to put it in the shop, which will be a big hassle for me.

Help anybody?

Andrew

Your water pump could be stuffed. The pump will leak coolant from weep holes to indicate this.

Have u checked your oil. Could be the head gone. See if the oil is a milky colour. Would explain the bad idle. Also if u put more coolant in it that is bad. The original coolant that u had in there is probably different to the new coolant u just used and they will react (U cannot mix coolants under any circumstances) it will do damage tyo any alloy parts in the engine.

sounds like the head gasket........

however, try a new rad cap and thermostat. both of these will give you the same symptoms.

The reason why your car was idling between 1500 and 2000 RPM is because your car was running above its normal temperature. When its hotter, it'll make the engine run faster to turn the fan faster to help cool the radiator down... spose it doesn't work if theres no coolant hehe

Probably best to take it too a mechanic, they'll sort it out in a jiffy.

I had problem with mine where the head gasket had carketed it and was leeking coolant (no oil nor was the coolant getting into the oil), so yer, could be head but yer, i'm no mechanic.
