Timing belt/Waterpump Labor feedback Wed, 10 March 2004 02:14 Go to next message
Just got quoted $620 for labor alone for the above...
its just a 2JZGE...

Is that a fair price??? I was thinking its a little on the high side...

any comments are appreciated.

it IS a bitch of a job, but even at $60 /hr its not exactly 10hrs work... maybe 5 or 6 at the VERY outside for a slow mechanic ? i dunno, but id say thats a bit rich (then again i do everything myself, so ANYTHING a workshop charges i think is over the top)

water pump is about $120 (genuine)
timing belt around $90 (that wasnt genuine tho)

your own garage under your own house... anyone else is in it for the money.

there's a recent tech discussion on how hard this task was - i think ed_ma61 or draven initiated it.

Big job. Need to take off the timing belt to get to the water pump. If you take a look and see where that is and what has to come off to get to the timing belt, you will appreciate why he would like to charge you $600. It was recently covered in a thread initiated by Draven - I gave a reasonably detailed step by step process.

By all means shop around and see what other shops will charge. Ultimately, these people are businesses trying to feed their families, not charities looking after your well being.

penrith toyota Smile

ask to speak to todd

and yeah, 4-5 hours of actual work. not counting piss stops, coffee/lunch breaks, talking, fart assing about, elastic band fights etc...

be wary of by-the-hour though, you could get stung "yeah mate, the bolt was siezed, took us 17 hours once we walked to sydney and got a new one"...

yeah, ed and I did this recently

it is a royal pain in the arse, simply because so much crap has to come off before you can get to all the water pump bolts. None of it hard mind you (if you have ed to take off the crank pulley bolt without pneumatic tools), just time consuming.

timing belt, timing belt tensioner, crank pulley, lower timing belt cover, cam gears, front and rear cam gear covers.
but $620 is definitly too much for the job.

thanx ed and draven... penrith huh? should i quote ALSC membership? hahaha...

but i do remember Neil from ALSC saying that the waterpump had gone up in price... we'll see.

the guy at the workshop reckoned he needs about 3hrs... hope he is fast and STILL do a good job. Rolling Eyes

I had mine done on the 1ggte for $300 in half a day and paid $140 for the part.

And I hear the 1ggte ones are also hard to get to.

The best place in brissy that i know of is a place call darra mechanical at darra. The guy to speak to is called ron. Tell them the guys at Hi-tech radiators sent u over and he will look after yoiu. he is real good at what he does and is reasonably cheap to.
