only had my P's for like a week, so havent had time to experiment much? in 2nd gear ive hit 100kmh with 4 people in car, on a slight hill.
|
At the risk of sounding like a granny....mate are you trying to become another statistic? Had your license for a week? Why not "experiment" with 3 of your friends in the car so you can kill them too? And I suppose you did your speed "trials" in a nice quiet suburban backstreet?....You are not cool just because your 4AC can apparently do 100 in second gear (likely -not). At least do it by yourself where the only people you hurt if you axe yourself will be your grieving family.
I'm no goody two shoes, but I dont feel we should encourage young guys to do this sort of stuff on public roads. There is much satisfaction to be had in driving on public roads whilst still being responsible - I dont think speed is the only means by which to appreciate a car.

| Well, no burning oil really but I do disagree - you sound not like a granny but like a stodgy middle-aged sheep person who thinks that loud = high revs = fast = speeding = dangerous, regardless of circumstances, I'm surprised you didn't also rail at him for playing loud music on his big car stereo (which he also is not suggested by what he says). He's talking about doing 100km/h in second - something you can do quite safely (except for possible engine damage) and legally on a freeway, for example. Apart from the added stress on the car, and the higher potential acceleration if the engine is in its power band and not revving it's nuts off, doing 100km/h in second is no different from doing 100km/h in fourth.
FWIW, the Supra's driver's manual says not to exceed 102km/h in second, but I've never had it over 90km/h. Third is about 150km/h, and they don't list speeds for 4th and 5th although I believe redline in those gears to be ~200km/h and ~250km/h respectively. I don't rev 4th and 5th out because I get boost creep with sustained high revs and I don't want to blow anything.

sure, I agree that there are places that are more appropriate than others for such things - your example of the highway being a fair one. It just astounds me the number of young people who cane around suburbia thinking that noone gets hurt doing it... I guess my post was cynical, so I apologize for being presumptuous.
Like the P plater in a blue STI who passed me the other day, for instance. He flew around me in 60 zone, weaving traffic at probably over 100kph, past houses and the like. Just plain stupid, I think...
And for the record, i dont think I made any reference to thinking lots of revs was bad, I questioned the time and place he chose to do it.
But really, unless you are gearing for a track (which next to no-one here would be) who cares what speed you reach in what gear? I doubt there is any need to mention that rarely is it quickest to take your car to the limiter in every gear. Other than gearing to use overrev to avoid an upshift on the circuit, I struggle to think of a useful application.
Does it matter that much on your street car that you are going to change your ratios if you're unhappy that your car does 90 instead of 100kph? - I think not.

In the last few days I've been interested in the top end of my 86 Celica SX.
First few gears are estimates but:
1st: 50 @ 7250
2nd: 90 @ 7250
3rd: ~130 @ 7250
4th: 180 @ 7250
5th 200 @ 6000
The tacho had more on it, but the engine didn't have a lot to give.

30ish in first, 45-50 in second, 70-75 in third, 110 in fourth (im guessing, i havent taken it past 104... and 5th would be a cruisy 110, because of wind resistance and the sucky 14 year old motor

Toyota Vienta V6 Touring 1996
I'm never looking at what speed i'm doing in any gear except 5th.
But according to my owners manual, i shouldn't go faster than:
1st: 52
2nd: 83
3rd: 127
4th: 175
5th: Not mentioned
Personally, i heard a "clunk" at ~215 (wasn't really watching, but 215 was the last speed i checked at). Was that a limiter?
And to avoid all legalities: I was at 'the track'.

Has anyone got any ideas what would be the best value for money out of the st162, ae92sx and a 1g conversion(st141)? though i dont think the 1g conersion would be that great.. because it will still handle like a boat til i pump fat cash into it..
sorry if it's a bit off topic!!

I agree - unless that dude was on the freeway (which I bet he wasn't) then it's just stupid. I spent the first 6 mnths-year of my licence driving sensibly ('cause I didn't have my own car), and I count myself better off for it. it's not until you'vebeen through an "oh shit" experience at 100 that you realise how much more dangerous it is than 60km/hr. And with an almighty 1 week of driving experience, panic is the most likely result, ending in broken long bones.
And this isn't coming from a middle aged overly serious person.
