ST 185 GT4? Wed, 10 March 2004 11:08 Go to next message
G'day all Toymods newbie here

I was wondering if anyone here knows much about the ST 185 GT4 celicas? I am looking at replacing my current 2002 Corolla with a more...'me' car.

I have seen a couple for sale, a Jap spec 1992 GT4, with a supposed 57 k's for 12 grand, just had a black/purple respray (crash repairs?). Also since it is apparently legal to wind back speedos in Japan this could quite easily be a 150,000 + km car, something i don't want.

I have also seen a red 1990 aus spec for 15.5 grand, with 131,000 and 17" wheels. These are both in Victoria, and im in Queensland, so i can't easily go and inspect the cars (I'm getting my uncle to) I was just wondering what a general price is, and what condition these cars are usually in.

Thanks in advance lads and ladies. Cool

you have come to the right place Smile

a search should reveal a wealth of knowledge on these forums as there are quite a few gt4 owners that frequent here

there are some great sites out there too such as...

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/gt4/
http://www.altrac.net
http://www.rennison.info/newgt4faq/

don't rush into buying one... the biggest problem i found when looking at them were dodgy 'mods' or damage done by wannabe rally drivers

patience... and you need to check them out for yourself!

if you find a vic person on the forums who knows about gt4s (or just cars) and ask nicely they might go look at it for you.
I've done this on more than 1 occasion for people in other states.

Thanks Danny and Draven

A few things i have been told by friends to look out for are the engine struts or bars, see if they are standard, and obvious things like checking panels for bog/rust, and new paint jobs.

Danny, can you(or anyone else who know GT4's) tell me of anyother 'mods', 'quick fixes' or other oddities that thrashed GT4's have in common to look out for, ie non-standard parts, replaced parts. Just so i really know what to be looking for.

Thanks for the info.

it depends if you are looking for a stock car or not... i was... so that i could start modding from scratch

others prefer modded cars because it saves them money but with it you can get problems if the mod is a 'dodgy' one

look at pics of the stock engine bay and then look at various gt4s and you'll learn to spot the mods

i'd stay away from anything lowered myself

ask the owner about mods and ask for receipts... often if he or his cuz has done them they may be a bit dodgy
