i'm going... i was planning to leave thursday mid afternoon to arrive late early friday morning - plus no driving at dawn or dusk (too much road kill).

i was going to start the return trip on the Sunday nite after dark (i've only booked two nights at the motel) but taking a bit more time coming back so i arrive monday nite.

i was going to go via the New England hwy to Tamworth - less trucks than via goondiwindi?

have found a co-driver.

Chris/Blake/others?,

Wilbo & I are leaving BNE on the thursday afternoon and driving down in stages, something like:
BNE to Stanthorpe
Stanthorpe to Glen Innes
Glen Innes to Tamworth
Tamworth to Coonabarabran
Coonabarabran to Dubbo
...or something like that.

Stopping long enuf at each place to have a quick power sleep, food or just a walk-about. I figure that we'd be in Dubbo by first light friday morning or slightly later (if we both flake at Tamworth or Gunndedah).

Do you like night-time driving? 'Cause we'd avoid sunrise & sunset (too many oversized, jumping creatures) and probably drive sensibly (double-demerit point in NSW that w/end??) most of the way, particularly the hilly bits.

I usually try to find a big-name freight convey (not some psycho-speedhead owner-driver) and sit between truck 1 & 2 so the lead truck cleans up the rubbish and lights the way. But if there's a bunch of us then it'll be much safer to string out over a few K's, avoid the trucks and catchup at every town.

so... who wants to tag - and do a sustained boost run north of Stanthorpe on the straight bit Wink ?

i cant believe youd let someone drive your car jeremy Confused

I'm going to be going down thursday around 6ish +
then ill come home the following friday or saturday i think ....spending some time with the relies.

Anyway..guys i think itd be quicker to go the way:

Bris to warwick
Warwick to goondiwindi

in between there (forget order Confused)
gunnedah
coonabarabran and a couple of others.

My family live in wellington - 45 min from dubbo and we drive down there regularly...so this way might save you some time.

well ... i was thinking of:
leave at about 3- 3:30pm
get to warwick or stanthorpe before dark
wait about 1 hr for dusk to go and the kangaroos to get off the road
down to glen innes
wait for 1-2 hr - maybe a quick nap
down to tamworth
wait for 1-2hr - more sleep and/or coffee
over to Coonabarabran
wait for 1-2hr - more sleep and/or coffee
if dawn come's then wait for sun to clear horizon
arrive Dubbo - quick sleep in park before booking into hotel after 10am

rather than one monster long rive with quick stops - decent runs with long stops to refresh.

but, if someone thinks realistic driving times means we could approx 6:30-7pm then i'm willing to listen - but Wilbo also needs to agree.

FWIW: I've found most skippies on the road around dusk/dawn - and at those time headlights are most to useless so at those times your're mostly blind...

its not possible for me to leave brisbane before 6.30- 7. I wont get home from work until 5.15

Are you sure you want to go the tamworth route charles? Seriously the goondiwindi then coonabarabran, gunnedah route is a lot quicker...and a LOT better road...less roos also. This is the route i know, so id prefer to go that way personally Confused but, ill keep you informed if im going lol.

hi blake, i'll have a chat to wilbo about which route - i was suggesting Glen Innes/Tamworth as i know the road down as far as Glen.

The Newell hwy does carry more truck traffic - will it be as heavy as normal seeing as it will be the end of the working week prior to the holiday?

fwiw: When i pop the route into:
<http://www.nowwhereroute.com/travelmate/mapmaker/m appage.aspx?Type=Brisbane_QLD_Dubbo_NSW>
it pops up your route.

As for bugs - clean them off before they get baked on by the heat - they're worst around dusk/dawn anyway - so once things cool off they'll drop in numbers - yet another reason to avoid driving at those times (poor vision, kangaroos, bugs)

If it's a clear night they also follow the moon instead of the hwy traffic.

As a last resort - fly-screen zip locked to the front radiator should stop most of the gunk - and toss/replace the screen in dubbo.

(2) Charles & Wilbo - 0414 269 310 - charles

btw - has anybody got a loaner 2-way radio? or should i buy one from Supracrap or Jarcar before leaving - just that i wont use it often.

btw 2: meet point sounds fine - can you locate it on www.whereis.com.au and post the link? (find location, email it to yourself, then post URL in email - should work)

norbie lives like 2 min from there so...its not really neccessary if u (charles) know where it is...its down the road from the sizzler...about 2-3km from the hospital.

I havent got a 2 way...but am also keen on the idea...mobile rates are fucken outreageous if we need to have long talks lol...plus having one makes for good fun with driving jokes etc Smile
How much are they, and how many sets do u get with it?

Sorry: my bad - i mean IPSWICH RD, not the motorway! motorway starts about 3-4k from the KFC.

yup, i know the place... but for those wanting to rockup at the last minute... Wink

sorry, that's one mother of a URL, is a copy/paste out of whitepages.com.au for HJs at Annerley. If it stops working, search for Hungry Jacks in the white pages and there's a map link for each store.

Radios:
Supercrap had a hand-held unit for about $40 - range unknown - digi<something> brand. <no details available>
Jaycar have:
DC1020 - UHF unit for $40 with headset for $15 but am not sure if it uses the same band as the standard 40 channel units. <http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=DC102 0>
DC1030 which is a standard 40 channel unit but is $80 <http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=DC103 0>
DC1010 which is a standard 40 channel unit and is $50 <http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=DC101 0>
Dick SMith have:
DIGITOR 40Ch Deluxe Com UHF CB - $50. <http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/406fd ff1065ad548273fc0a87f9c070f/Product/View/D1794> tho this link might break so just search for part D1794

All of these would have a range of about 3k.

power source is batteries - unless you buy a cig-charger kit - regardless of brand, they seem to be about $15-20> Jaycar units require rechargable batteries (EXTRA!@&!) and the charger just recharges the batteries.

I'd rather leave earlier and take it slow... I have a feeling I'll be fairly tired so frequent stops are the go. 7pm at Annerley HJ's works for me, can we lock that in Eddie?

Meanwhile my poopra is still without a transmission. Hopefully I'll be able to get it back together before Thursday!

hi norbie!

2 guys, who kill 2 cars, and had to take 2 trips just to get back to brisbane... what a fuked up weekend ...

me thinks carbi/fuel system decided that while on boost it should not deliver enuf fuel, cause the other hardware appears to be intact:
-the gaskets on the turbo (in & out exhaust) were not leaking
-the bearing in turbo seems to have same play as per 2 weeks ago
-the exhaust turbines has no visible damage (e.g. no sagging or missing bits)
-the intake turbine is clean (e.g. front seal intact) and has no debris
-the smoke came from oil on the waste-gate and it had carbon 'stain' like you get from sooty candle flame so i think we were lucky not to have engine fire
-the oil-drain hose (heavy duty black hydraulic hose) had split below turbo which is why wastegate is oil-soaked
- the inlet side flange of wastegate had minor leak so most of the noise must be from the buggered manifold gasket.
-the exhaust manifold/turbine/dump pipe is internally coated with carbon/soot so the short run it got to get on/off trailer while running non-boost with heavy choke must have coated everything, because even the plugs are black
- the manifold is stuffed because when you squeeze the wrap, you can hear it crunch - so a lot of the manifold has turned to ferrous-oxide or similar - will remove later tonight and take more pics
... so i'm selling the carbi, holley pump, T04 turbo and have other plans/moves afoot (tba)

... oh and we killed Wilbo's auto gearbox - so instead of spending the next few days off work doing fuck-all, i'm helping wilbo install a 5speed into the cressida...

... so we shoulda dumped the car in warwick in piled in with you/blake.

...a painful lesson....

moral of the story? don't try to soldier on witha problem car - dump the hunk-o-shit and don't go back for a replacement. Razz

charles.
