n00b to ae86 drift

Hi guys,
This question has probably been asked a million times before, but i'm looking to buy a cheap ae86 for drift that already has a 4AGE (100 kw), i currently have a nissan 180sx with coilovers mechanical lsd, braces and so on, i've been doing some drifting with it with (www.initialdrift.com.au) at oran park and EC and i really wanna compete but i'm to scared to smash up a 15k car in a tandem drift. I just wanted to know what type of suspension setup these cars have from the factory, i'm assuming that the rear end is live axle not IRS? If that's the case is that suitable for drift and if it is, what do i do stiffen it up, is it possible to install coilovers without swapping rear ends or making drastic changes to control arms, hubs, tie rods etc?
Also in terms of suspension mods to assist in drifting, is it the same formula that i would apply to say my car, whereby, you'd have heaps of braces, lots of camber on the front, lost of caster to allow the steering wheel to correct really quickly, obviously really stiff spring rates and so forth and a working handbrake??
Can you guys also suggest a price i should pay for a car that already has a 4ag conversion and some other goodies, things i should look out for??
The other reason why i wanna buy one is that i have a soft spot for old skool jap wheels, i've got a set of watanabe rs8's and what better way to show em off then to put em on a sprinter!

i will briefly touch on this as it's been covered before. 1st you need to research into aus spec sprinters and JDM levins/truenos and their differences...this will help you determine whether to import or build up your own car
if you want the car for drift you want to make sure you get an lsd & discs...you'll find most aus spec sprinters have an S series open spinner & drum setup. ideally a T series (JDM) rear is the go but you're looking at around 2k to get that sorted. You can always chop a hilux(f series i think) or r31 diff. it is possible to retain the s series setup but you'll find you'll go through them quickly
as for price...an aus spec with minimal suspension upgrades & 4age would cost around 5-6k (fwiw aus spec suspension sucks)
here's a link to a few cars for sale atm...give you an idea of what your money is worth.

keep an eye out in the for sale section of toymods also to give you a better idea of prices.
you've basically got 3 options...either import a levin and get the 4age, t series rear & some suspension for around 10k, build up an aus spec sprinter and prolly spend about the same amount or buy someones completed project
coilovers wont be a problem...checkout www.whiteline.com.aufor other suspension gear prices

then i seriously suggest you think hard about buying a sprinter for drift. Big $$$ to setup & they arent cheap cars to maintain...you're better off getting an ae71 rolla and doing the same mods
toymods tech articles & google is your friend
www.billzilla.org <--- also packed with heaps of useful ae86 info

i think your best bet here would be to buy an import silvia and do not register it. you can get them for around $4-6K from places like ichiban (dont think they have one at the moment tho). if you import it, you can get one with minor mods already, then you can mod it how you want without worrying about the legals. ie you can have rose-jointed control arms, full cage, fully stripped interior etc... the money you save on rego and other crap you can put towards a car trailer which will cost you approx $3K. it will all be cheaper than a sprinter in the long run, cause they are a better car from factory to drift in, im under the impression that sprinters are a harder car to drift in unless in the hands of someone with pretty good skills. that guy at the intitial drift meet at oran park in the yellow sprinter for example. he was very talented

But moemoe was worried about damaging his s13, wouldn't it be worse to smash a JDM ae86? I think it would.
Q) Which is easier to get parts for, JDM 86 or S13?
Q) Which costs you less to modify NA or Turbo?
AE86Drift is right saying the 86 is a mad car to drift, but its totally different to drifting a high power car in terms of technique and skill required, need i say FUN x 100.
MoeMoe, if you really are dead set on an ae86, find a JDM one for sure. But if its money your worried about I would find an import S13 and not register it like EVOSTi says, or buy a cheap aus spec, lock the diff and wang a turbo on the 4ac (not recommended haha)

Yeah i've thought about the s13 as an option unregistered but i was just wondering that if it could cost about the same to purchase an ae86 then i would go that, i think i'll stick with the 180. Cheers fellas

AE86 is a very good car to train driver. One day in the future, when u can chase a S13 K and right on its tail going downhill...u will know it is worth to buy a 86.

i beleive its a poor car to learn to drive (hard) in, but rather a good one once you have more skill.
