after last weekends cruise to the gong.. ive developed a banging or knocking noise after i thrash the car.... happens only at low revs (like idle) and only lasts a min or two. i looked down the engine and noticed that the extractors are pretty close to the bellhousing.. could this be the source of the banging?? any thoughts? can extractors swell up or move that much that quickly?

yes they do expand quick and if you are driving hard the body can flexs aswell combining them both. is it coming from engine bay or under the floor? otherwise it might be bottom end bearing. just ask nark to go for a drive with you as he is an expert on this!hahahaha. you might have had an oil stavation for a split second hard driving. also look for thing like auto fliud cooler lines if you have an auto as they can knock against the bell house. or engine mount. besides that very hard to tell from an email. mick

check all your bolts holding you manifold on to the block also check the bolts at the flange behind the manifold if it has a flange. then run through anc check the exhaust system for cracks and also check if any of the dampening rubbers are broken. also could be an oil pressure problem or a number of things best bet is if you cant find anything get a mechanic to check it out.

to explain further... the banging/rattling is like a knocking which can be felt under the floor when the car is at idle or v low rpm.. but is kinda heard from the front centre... around where the gearbox bellhousing is. im guessing it would be the extractors, so ill check all those blots and sh!t, and hope that fixes it. i'd say thats it cos the 18RGU does move a fair bit on idle (chugs side to side) i dont know how to check for it being the bottom end bearing, i dont think its internal since its intermittent and not a regular noise.
All else fails i just dont thrash the car as much.

I think you got that around the wrong way, it's: "Trash it till it goes better", never fails. (yet)

it could be the gearbox hitting the underneath of the car with the rough idle..... just a thought

firstly, how the fudge do i check my big end bearing??
secondly... i dont think thats it becuase the banging of the cylinder on the head would be a little more regular, and not quite so erratic would it not?

sounds like one of the exhaust mounts has snapped. jack the car up and put stands or bricks under the car along with the jack at grab hold of the exhast an give it a good{hard as you can} shake in the both horazontal and vertical. this will tell you if its the exhast most of the time. mick

i know what a big end bearing sounds like and its not nice. especialy when u pull the motor down and there are little bits of metal floating around in it. it sounds like a realy loose timing chain on startup but constant
normally you only heara big end bearing while cruising or under load. always make sure you warm your car up before you go for a thrash. or even a spirited drive. since i have rebuilt mine after a big end bearing failure on number 3 cylinder i dont rev it over 4 grand untill it is at operating temp.
if you need to know how to check if it is the big end PM me
