interchangeable turbos?

My brother went out and bought a new turbo for his starion (without checking if it was the right type - idiot)
Anyways, we only need the front half, not the exhaust housing. So he got another td05-12a turbo (which is the same code as his).
BUT upon getting it back here, I find that the one he bought seems to use water and oil cooling (has a hollow bolt that resides on the inside of the housing) where as his was only oil cooled.
so..... can I simply remove the hollow water feed bolt from the new turbo and install it, just running off oil cooling?
as far as I can see, everything else looks like a direct match up (apart from the intercooler pipe, which is a custom diameter, and the heat shield, which was a custom item)

Yes, you can run the turbo without water cooling, just remember to idle that sucker down real good!

further to the first question...
the stock turbo has a vac hose coming off the inlet housing going to boost controller, EBOV, etc, and the replacement doesn't. Now with my limited knowledge, I'm guessing this means the original turbo was for an AFM engine and the replacement was for a map sensored engine.
Help?

You can run all that crap from a fitting placed anywhere between the compressor and throttle body. There's no real need to have it on the compressor housing itself.

it's not the td05 you're thinking of - it's a starion, and that's the stock turbo (real shitter)

Starions came with TC06's for the early models and some of the later engines came with TC05's. I know, I had one. A TD05 is an improvement.

I have
but he loves the damn thing, despite the fact it's going to cost him almost as much in repairs as he bought it for (and he paid too much for it)
I told him not to buy this one, that it was going to die... but noooooooo

just to add to the fun - the intercooler pipes are not the standard size, so have to either weld a piece on to the turbo or get a new pipe.
PLUS this turbo has the compressor outlet in a different place, so the piping doesn't fit up anyway
stupid starions.
Will pirtek make up a re-inforced i/c pipe with a nipple in it for a vacuum hose?

I'd go to an exhaust shop for something like that.

the pipe I'm talking about is a 15cm connector between the turbo and the actual IC pipe, which is why I was thinking pirtek

well, pirtek dont do moulded hoses (which was a bit of a suprise to me).
they recommended a place in wetherill park that will do it, but I'm not super keen on going that far for a piece of hose that isn't even going on my car.
Can anyone recommend a place a little closer to home?

last time I let him do something with his car is when he ended up with this bloody turbo that doesn't fit properly :\
and the time before that he took me out there to look at the car. after a 5 minute inspection, I specifically told him "Do not buy this car. the engine will blow in 5-10,000 kms"
so what does he do? and what happens?
since he's bought it, it's needed a complete reco on the engine, new oil cooler, new water pump, new intercooler, new turbo
