3rd gear crunch

hey there
i have a problem with my gearbox, yesterday i crunched it in 3rd gear like nearly 10 times. mostly on downshift but it has also happened when goin up gears aswell. it would crunch big time b4 getting into gear. this is when shifting normally, i've tried putting into 3rd very slowly and it goes in nice all the time but annoyin. i've crunched it once or twice b4 but thought i did somethin wrong but now i know its not me.
i have an aw11, and my gearbox is lsd. i didnt know what oil to put in there but i saw it had atf previouly so just continue to use atf and been driving it for bout month now. could this be the problem? i heard people on US mr2 forum use redline mt90 but i dunno where to buy it, will this fix the problem?
say worst comes to worst how much will it cost to fix? or are these gearbox redily available second hand to buy?

Look im not specifically sure if the oil in your gearbox has been whats made the difference, but i do know that using the wrong oil in items with moving parts, e.g diffs and gearboxes do create a problem if things grinding. If you are curious to find out what oil to use im sure that castrol or some1 will have a listing on the oil that the recomend for your car.
Good luck

Sounds to me it could be the third gear synchro if it's crunching nearly every time you put it into third gear.
I'm no expert but this happened to a friends celica box, everytime he shifted into third at anything above 3000 rpm, it would crunch. Pulled it apart ... bung third gear synchro.
If it is, its not cheap to fix, it requires dropping the box, taking it apart, and getting a replacement synchro (might as well do the rest if it comes to this as well). This SHOULD be done either at Toyota or by a gearbox specialist.
As for you oil ... it has ATF in there you say ? That is bad bad juju. ATF should certainly not be used in a manual box since its weight is vastly different to gearbox oil designed for use in a manual.
I use Redline MT90 (75w90) in my supra box (R154) and I would recommend it to anyone with a high performance box (except the getrag 6 speed ). You might want to try Redline Lightweight Shockproof oil and see how you go, it might or might not fix the problem. Chances are it won't but you never know! Downside to the oil is that its about $120 from Coventry's.
Hope this helps!
Good luck with it.

mine has the E51 with LSD too, and yes it crunches 3rd just like yours. it's done it on and off since 1999, i can up or downshift with-out a crunch/grind, but it all depends on when i shift (revs etc.).
i am useing Valvoline DuraGear (75w85 synthetic) oil in mine with a Nulon additive, it helps my shifts a bit and deffinatly worked on my notchy 2nd gear downshift.

If it were me I would try it with the MT-90 first, however if you try this and it still crunch's then your down $120 already.
I would also get the box looked at by someone, because its only a matter of time before you lose third altogether. (Especially if you drive it hard)

Yes... the E51 has reknowned weak synchros. They all go after about 120-150k of hard driving... Toyota realised they were shit and upgraded to a double synchro in later versions of the gearbaz as found in the 92-93+ NA SW20's (not sure on years so someone pls correct if I'm wrong.)
If you want to fix it? have the gearbox rebuilt using the newer synchros, Toyota can get these for you! But you will be looking at over a grand for the new 2,3,4 gear synchros and labour etc. to do the box. This will make a bulletproof gearbox that will last ages and cop a flogging.
A cheaper option is just do the troublesome synchro...(3) but i mean if you already got the box on a bench you may as well do the rest hey...
I have had nothing but good reports on the Redline oil... most claim that it quietens the box down alot and smoothes up the shift action considerably.
Depends...! If you plan on keeping it for a while rebuild the GB... other wise just run Redline oil till you sell it.
But I would advise... DON'T DO NOTHING or it will get worse!

hey thanx again for reply, ok i'll put in some redline mt90 as soon as i know where to buy them in sydney (someone can lead me to a shop or site) and add some gearbox addictives from kmart c what happens as im too broke to get it fixed
hey feral, damn ur gearbox sounds exactly like mine. i can drive without crunchin gear if i wanted to, just got to feel it abit b4 sliding it in gear = slower. and my 2nd gear is so sticky when down gearing only but im used to it now.
i also found if i take 1st to bout 5500rpm i can rip it to second fast enough to chirp it in next gear though if i take it all the way to redline it stops in neutral for a split second b4 getting into second gear. dunno y
