Mate, I'm going to be getting the spare wheel well cut out of my TA22 to fit a small drop tank under the back! I dont want to try and make my car look like a ToadRunner!

Hey this is an old thread but I'm interested in getting a drop tank for a TA/RA23. Will I need to cut metal out of the boot / spare wheel well (id rather not)? Anyone know what is required for this type of conversion?

sam_: you would need to cut the spare out cause drop tanks are a bit heavy and would need to be bolted to the chassis rails so as not to fall out/down. a good drop tank would have 10mm walls
ben_ra23: you can do anything you want but i would recommend to put the spare somewhere else and not just get rid of it... you would need fuel lines done to accomodate the new tank too
Cool1: what you gonna do with the4 spare???

The spare will be strapped down on the flat floor in the boot. And where did you get 10mm wall tanks from

my cousin (mechanic) takes his car (original 351 FORD) to the runs and has a drop tank in it with 10mm walls all round... he was telling me that it was best to use that cause firstly it helps to weigh the rear end down, and also for engineering i think... the 10mm may be a bit over but i do know for a drop it needs to be pretty thick cause it is seen and low to the floor and cause of rear enders... also my team leader at me old job had the same thickness walls in his LJ torana (but thats a cruiser/classic car and not race)

I have no idea why they used 10mm. They must of just used some scrap somewhere to build the tanks.
Being close to the ground or near the back of the car means shit when you look at all the plastic tanks fitted to cars from the factory.
Also take the v8 super cars for example. They have much more chance of being rear ended at high speeds than any street car. The tanks in these use materials thiner than 5mm.
10mm walls has been scrapped from under some noobs forskin

Oh and a 4mm wall tank will take more impact than 10mm wall. 4mm with just bend and crumple whereas the 10mm will just bust the welds.

the new plastic ones are designed to crumble and cause they are plastic no spark would occur to light the fuel... like i said they use it for drags and to help weigh rear end down... that could be reason thick walled drop
but i have seen his drop and it is literally as thick as the chassis rail thickness... also just cause he is a mechanic i dont say he is always right or whatever... this is what he said to me, he is my cous so i cant see why he would lie to me but hey who knows... i mentioned what i was told... right or wrong im sure of there is an engineer on these forums they would step up and state the right answer for all opf us to know...
with your drop convo and the spare are you just going to use those bungee ropes/tie downs?

All my the info I have posted on the tanks is from the engineer that does all the tanks for rally cars and all the Cobras getting around.
I'll be using a single mini ratchet strap to hold the spare down.

Im also going a drop tank in my floor of my ta23. Im using 3mm alloy and solong as the corners are made properly and not just 90 degree corners they are very strong. Im gonna try to make it around my spare wheel so i dont need to cut it out but if not ill just remove it and also remove where the jack used to go and try to sqeeze the wheel in there.
