bloody miss Tue, 16 March 2004 07:39 Go to next message
ok i have just got a fully rebuilt 350 holley put on my 4m it had a 350 holley b4 but ran hella rich so i took it to a carbie place and the guy said i have the wroung type of 350 holley on there so he said i'll put the right one on there for $300 and install it for $100

so i went and picked it up and it ran worse than before Razz
(this was with half an exaust so it was loud as fk and didnt want to idle so i got the exaust fixed and brought it back.

the guy said its not getting enough fuel so he put an electric fuel pump on (carter fuel pump - pumps 6psi) it ran better but still had a miss but it wasnt constant it would do it every now and then.

he replaced the plugs, points, condesor, rotorarm and set the timing, he also tried colder spark plugs as it was running rich and said he had put size 58 jets in there from 61 ( Confused jet sizes mean nothing to my feble knowledge)

and still had an intemitent miss

so he said i reckon its the distributer so he suggested electronic ignition

but my wallets getting pretty slim at the moment so i thought id get a second opinion so i rang a performance tuning place they suggested this other carbie place

i told the guy what the go was and strait out he said its the carbie he said its to big he said " the carbie you wouldve had on there before wouldve been single throat the 350 is dual"

he recommends a webber i said i'll bring it in and get him to have a look

what do you guys reckon/suggest?

Yep. Bolt on the 5ME fuel injection manifold and ECU.

No.

I reckon fuel injection might. But then again I'm not sure what your misfire is due to.

Don't waste your time with carbs seriously. For the price of a Weber, you will be able to get a whole fuel injection system from a 5ME.

Wilbo will be wrecking an MX62 soon...chat to him. Or go to some local wreckers. I have wiring diagrams/ECU pinouts if that's an issue.

Would have been nice to have setup an in-tank fuel pump in your drop tank.

fuel filter?

Condition of carb?

A weber will only solve the problem if the problem is the current carb.

What cc's is a 5ME? - a 350 is getting towards large for most toyota's isn't it?

I hate mystery misfires!

sell the holley to buy EFI hardware...

a single H 350 is big enuf to power a 265 hemi valiant, it's too big for a 5M.

even dropping the jet size won't help you much - they're designed for big-breathing engines (like big fords and valiants 6 cyls).

if you don't like the idea of going EFI then get a factory carbi, rebuild it with a carbi kit and get a HEI kit from dick smith or Jaycar (approx $50) to improve the spark. the holley's only good for stoping the shed door slam shut on you.

also, intermitent miss with throttle steady would be spark, not fuel...

wont i lose power if i go efi?

to setup the efi properly woundlt i have to get it tuned up + dont you have to have electronic ignition with efi Confused

so i would need the efi manifold, ecu, loom, electonic igintion dont you need to put sensors in the exaust and intake?

that sounds pricey

i've spent like $250 on the air filter for the carb (k&n element with k&n extreme top) so then id have to get all the efi set up then another air filter.

I love the sound of the carbie suction and want to stick to carbie until i do a conversion

one last thing whats a HEI?

HEI = high energy ignition.

Isn't your motor completely standard apart from some headers/exhaust and the wretched Holley?

The EFI system really will be able to cope with the minimal improvement in airflow afforded by the exhaust.

You buy a full EFI system off a 5ME. If you look around, loom ECU, dizzy and intake manifold will set you back $150. MX62 Cressidas are currently the wreckers pet hate. Get your drop tank modified to take an MA70 in tank EFI pump.

Sell that POS Holley and Carter low pressure fuel pump to fund your upgrade. This way you will have setup your fuel system for when you do decide to do a conversion and you will have a perfectly reliable EFI setup that you never have to tinker with again. You'll also learn all about EFI with the most basic EFI system, and come to realise how much even this basic EFI system shits on carbs.

As an aside, I'm not sure why you got a Carter fuel pump. My standard mechanical 4M fuel pump pumps enough fuel at 7 psi to fill 3 fuel bowls at full throttle. In fact, I had to adjust the fuel pressure down so I didn't overwhelm the needle and seats in the SUs.

the head / extractors have been ported and its got differnt pistons in there so it has a higher compresion.

the guy at this carbie place said it needs the fuel pump Razz
i doubt it now though

thats why i wanted the second opinion i think he's just interested in the $$

i spoke to another guy who said it sounds like the power valve (whatever that is)

he said he'll recon a webber and make an adapter plate fit it and tune it for $350

All the toyota wreckers are bloody rip offs over hear as u know i got quoted $300 for the electronic igniton of a 5m so you can imagine what they would quote for the rest

i'll do the ring around and get some prices but the place i rang is the biggest toyota wreker in WA

i dont want to bring the tank back to the dodgy fck who made it so that would be more $$ to get it put in there + finding the efi pump from an ma70

i hate my car Razz

Just take your time, sounds like there is no great rush.

Justin (clubagreenie) has some bits that you can have for free (+postage) and I have a range of bits you can have for free (+ postage).

Is there a Pick a Part style wrecker in Perth? Often they are quite well priced.

Setting it all up is a weekend job at a fairly luxurious rate. You could use a VL Commo fuel pump at a push if you didn't want to do the in tank bizzo.
