Ahhhhhhhhh my ears!!!!!

Heya,
Well, like I said in the members rides section the only thing I dont like about my SW20 is the bloody hugh exhaust the previous owner(idiot methinks...) has put on it. I mean my current car makes noise, but its good engine noise and doesn't hurt your ears if you drive with the window down.
The only way I can drive my car at the moment is with all the windows up, I tried to drive home from work this arvo with the windows down and targa off, by the time I got to Hornsby, I had a headache and a ringing in my ears. This car is just stupidly loud, well above the 93Db its supposed to be.
So what are my solutions short of getting a whole new exhaust system? I understand I might loose some power makeing the exhaust tips smaller, but seeing its N/A I didn't think that would make too much of a difference.
Anyway your ideas would be appreciated, what I'd give for a stock MR2 exhaust *sigh*

If you think about it, putting a smaller tip at the end of the exhaust is a better idea than a cannon. The fuel looses pressure and heat as it goes threw the exhaust system so by the time it gets to the end its lost a lot of speed and may increase back pressure. But then again, my theory could be utter bs :/

Did you say in another post that you don't like the look of the huge cannons aswell? If you do like it take it to an exhaust shop and explain that its too freeken loud and they'll be able to do something about it.... if you hate the look i think thatchanging from huge silly looking cannons should help.

is there anything under the car apart from the CAT?
maybe adding a hotdog-style resonator will cut down some of the drone - as well as looking at a more restrictive exit muffler - lukey make reliable, interference mufflers for turbos and NA motors.
anyway , if it's a NA motor, you need some backpressure in the exhaust. you're just shortening the life of the exhaust valves and wasting fuel with a monster exhaust on a NA motor.
you might even get some improved performace from going to a NA-designed exhaust.

Don't be such a wuss!!
Loud is good, hmmkay! louder is better!
He he... seriously, I had the same problem with a car I had once, although it was worse at about 2700 rpm (some sort of reverb situation happening)..
problem was, at 2700 was just on 100kph - so I started doing 110 all the time..
earplugs?

Yea freeway driving is killing me I'll go speak to an exhaust shop, I really didn't want to fork out more $$$, but I really do value my hearing. Its fine as long as the throttle is a little on, but as soon as you back off, or get up around 3000, hmmm....

I really do loathe those cannon mufflers. And this is precisely the reason why......
I too recommend a lukey or Redback interference muffler. ALso see if you are running bigger than 2" or 2.25" - lots people think 2.5" or bigger means better performance on an NA car.
But yeah, the exhaust shop sounds like the go!

This is going to sound abit silly, interference muffler, what do they do, or look like exactly? I assume they interfer with the noise, ie cut it down, but still try to allow good performance. Are these Lukey's different tips, or something like a cat? What kind of $$$ am I looking at(very roughly) and are there any good exhaust places in and around the Hornsby area which you've had good dealings with?

canon mufflers are really just a stright-thru perforated tube surrounded by a shell filled with mineral wool or some kind of artificial fibre - resonance (well energy and heat actually) is disapated thru the perforations into the material.
interference mufflers have pipe feeding into muffler via a perforated section and another perforated pipe leaving - not straight thru - so all the exhaust gases have to traverse the internal muffler space, loosing energy, heat on the way and which results in less sound and resonance.
a hot tog is really just an enclosed canon muffler.
as for who to do it? muffler pro was my choice, but that's brisbane.

Hotdog/resonator and decent Lukey muffler is the way to go. I had a 2.5in exhaust from cat back with a resonator and lukey turbo muffler put on my ma70 supra (1jz turbo). Passed inspection at <93 dB and only cost $300.
Plus you'd be able to sell the cannon(s) or entire exhaust if it's in good nick for a reasonable sum to offest the exhaust cost.

"constructive" is the only term i can think of for those last two posts.
like everyone else is saying, take it to an exhaust shop and tell them. they will have the answers and the tools to do something about it. if you only need a resonator, then you can buy one at the store/workshop for about $50, sometimes fitted for free.
i had my car quitened by installing a 18in res. cost me $40 cause we know the guy.
cheers

I read somewhere that one of the Honda engines had a properly designed 2" system. But owners were going for larger diameter aftermarket systems and were complaining about losing power.
