icon5.gif  Rules regarding private imports? Tue, 16 March 2004 23:08 Go to next message
Hey guys,
I'm trying to look into having an RS200 imported as a private import but I'm unsure of the rules regarding this.

I remember one rule saying that you'd have to work there for more than 3 months? Or was it a year?
Either way, my friend in Japan has been there for over a year now, so that's sweet.
Does he have to own the car for a certain period of time?
What sort of things do I need to do to bring in the car? Does it need to be complied, etc?

Any info (or references) gladly appreciated!

P.S.: Bloody IS200! I still can't stop thinking about it!

Ring Customs, and they will have data sheets or look on their site, as they spell it out pretty well what is required.

It used to be that you had tro own it for a certain period, but I don't know now.

The import duty is usually the killer !!!

I was looking at bringing in a M3 a few years ago from the UK.

Cheers

I can't help on the private import laws but why not just find an IS200 in good body condition with 200k km+ on it, bring in a front cut RS200 and convert it?

I'm sure you can find an IS200 for around $25,000
a front cut will cost less than $10,000, find the LSD and convert.

It depends I suppose on your intentions for the lease are you going to get the car at the end of the lease? if so you can get a novated lease and basically when you get the car get a major service done (involving an engine change) and put it on the lease. I was looking at doing the exact same thing a short time ago and could have got away with it. But a Ute is a more practical solution at the moment.

Other wise if you can get a private import but I think you need to own the car for 3 month (or whatever) In the U.S you need to own the car for 12 months and be in the U.S for 12 months before importing it.

check the Dept of Transport site ( www.dotrs.gov.au), but I believe that you have to have owned the vehicle for a period of 12 months, and have proof in the form of registration and de-registration certificates. In the case of Japan you also have to supply proof of the ownership of a car parking space (a quirk of Japan's limited per capita area). Also, I think you have to supply your international drivers license, or a license issued by the relevant country (ie. Japan if your looking to import from Japan).

Like I said, check the site though. The information is readily available.

Cheers,
Chris.

or try www.dotars.gov.au
A great source of importing info. I got all my info on the 15 yo rule to help me bring over my AW11 SC.

also try www.sevs.com.au for a listing on cars available for import.

The RS200 can't be imported via as a grey import since there's the IS200 already being sold here. Sad

Plan is to do a novated lease, but it's easier to convince my other half to buy an RS200 than to buy an IS200 and do an engine conversion...

I'll check the DOTRS site. Thanks for the replies guys!

Rule changed from 3 months to one year in 08/05/2000. Sad

Looks like that idea is going into the trashcan. Sad

that sounds like the best way, id do that, it would be an easy conversion

RS200 will never be allowed to imported under current scheme unless you can prove you owned it for a year (minimum ) in japan
to own a car in japan you need to prove you have a place to park it, dotars needs this documentation

like chrisso said Smile
