7M-GTE Check Engine Light

Hi guys,
Back again!
Yesterday I had the Soarer in at the mechanics getting a tune-up, they told me the timing was retarded 5 degrees and they set it back to zero, and just to keep my ear out for any pinging. On the way home i let the engine warm up a bit and then put my foot into it to see how it went, the engine revved hard up until around 4 grand or so, then completely cut out (as if i'd turned the car off and on really quickly) and then just kept on revving and changed gear (auto box) The check engine light came on when it did this and then went off a few seconds later. This has happened 3 times since getting it back, usually only when accelerating from a standing start in first gear
Now to add some more confusion to the problem, the car used to do a similar thing before i took it into them... even at idle it would be sitting there and then seem to just drop out, and return within half a second just as the problem above states.... no check engine light would appear though. This could happen at ANY time, can't narrow it down.
To remedy this problem which i beleive to be electrical (while fixing a blown head gasket) I changed all of the plugs but haven't gotten around to changing the leads yet
Anyone have any idea whatsoever?? I have a feeling that since changing the timing the car might be detonating when under high load (can't hear any pinging though) but then the fact that the car used to just cut in and out when just idling previously rules this fact out in my mind
The other question I have is that if my car was retarded 5 desgrees previously and then set back to zero would this cause an issue? Is the 7M supposed to be retarded to run normally??
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm sure a mechanic would need it for weeks to get any idea
Dan

I reckon your timing is out, and your mechanic didn't know what he was doing for your particular car. My mum's car was cutting out as if the timing belt was slipping teeth every so often. Her timing was out just a nic.
You should ask your mechanic if he set the timing 10 Degress before TDC with the timing mode activated (shorting the diagnostics block) Chances are he got it wrong.

Thanks very much for the info...
I'm not very well versed in that side of the engine, do you have any more information on how to check the timing? i've searched the web and can't find much. I've got no idea what pins to short in the diagnostic block, and then what to do with the results once i can see them either.
VERY much appreciated

Although I wouldn't trust a mechanic as far as I could throw them... I'd say your timing is probably right and that you've actually maxed out the air flow readings (ie. boost cut).
Say you were running a boost setting that was just short of the boost cut, your timing WAS retarded 5 degrees. When the timing was advanced 5 degrees to the correct position, the engine would most likely perform it's job better and would most likely flow a smidge more air in the process. Hence, boost cut.
Turn the boost down a touch and it will stop happening. Alternatively bridging TE1 and E1 (I think, been a while since I've had a dirty old 7M) to read the fault codes should hopefully prove it to be boost cut

wow... thanks for all the replies guys
to be honest it really feels like a boost cut ie only happens when i put the foot down a fair bit and the exhaust gasses are really screaming outta there.. but watching the boost gauge it seems to happen at around 0.7 bar which is around 10psi i'm guessing. Not sure where the factory boost cut is on the soarer but i assume it'd be a little higher than that??
I'll wind the boost back a smidge and let you know how happens!
Thanks again

Factory boost cut is 10-12psi and also varies somewhat with atmospheric conditions - If you're running 10psi and hitting the cut that's certainly not unusual.
Time for a boost cut defender

Wound the boost back a bit... spikes at 0.6 bar and settles down to around 0.5 to 0.55 bar and the issue hasn't ocurred since
Thankyou very much for all your help!
