icon5.gif  SX Rolla won't start in morning???? Fri, 19 March 2004 05:36 Go to next message
Need some help?
My SX rolla won't start straight away in the morning?
It kicks over no problem, but i have to try 3-4 times before it starts, and when it does start its heaps rough until i hit the accelerator.
When the engine is warm I have no problems starting it.
Any help on what it could be would be great?

Cheers

I have a GTi rolla and have the exact problem man.
The mechanic says its a cracked head or gasket. i pulled the plugs out and they are orange, he reckons thats from the moister getting in to the cylinders. cant work out what is wrong, im not losing water or oil and like you said, its only in the morning. If you start it and give it a quick rev it should be fine, you just need to get it to kick over. Clean your plugs every now and then to help it.
Thats as much as i can help you with it.

If anyone can give more info then i am all ears.

maybe your cold start injector is failing.

my AE82 CSX has this problem too in the morning, sometimes in the arvo too if i havnt started it at all that day.

it will turn over first go, but VERY rough, and even with giving it some fuel through the accelerator, it still will just die out again. it takes 2-4 goes before it will turn over and stay on... but it will still be rough until its over about 1,200rpm and im giving it gas.

so it would be the cold start injector eh? hrmn... ill check that out.

...a wealth of info from Paul Kujawa, Toyota and Nissan specialist with Autoline Telediagnosis. "One thing that comes up frequently is long crank time cold," he told us. "The problem is that the cold start switch isn't grounding the cold start injector. We see this on '83s all the way up to '89s. I suggest they go to the switch, which is usually next to the coolant temperature sensor -- the switch will generally have a brown two-wire connector, and the sensor a green two-wire connector. Unplug the brown connector from the switch and ground the wire from the switch itself, which is usually green or yellow, then see if it starts cold for you (if the engine's warm while you're working on it, you could take the injector out of the manifold and aim it into a jar to see if it's working, but accessibility is a problem on some models). Remember, the cold start injector is just for starting -- it only gets voltage with the key in the Start position -- so don't make the mistake of blaming it for cold running problems.

"Another situation with cold start time switches is that on some Camrys and Celicas there's a hard-start problem after the engine has been sitting for two to five hours," Kujawa said. "If it's still lukewarm it may need the cold start injector, but won't be getting it because the switch doesn't ground until it gets down to 95 deg. F. or below. An updated switch is available that grounds at 113 deg."
