Heya all!
Let me start by saying hi and i am now the proud owner of a TA22 1975 Celica.
Im currently in the process of getting it roadworthy ie: minor rust, fluids, and other tid bits.
What i want to know is what are the worthwhile possible engine swaps?
Im thinking 1jz-gte, 2jz-gte, 3sgte, 4agze.
Now ive read up here a bit and have ruled out the 3sgte by the sounds of it being so such a bad fit.
also whats the go with these ru motors? 18ru ??? and the others?
Cheers guys... any help apreciated as i want to figure the choices pros and cons so i can start consulting an engineer.
also anyone recomend an engineer?
Peace
TA-022 (Nathan)

18rg- not worth the money to fit it into the 22
1j & 2j - wont fit without firwall mods
3sgte - almost custom everything to fit as rwd *worth it though*
4agze- probably the easyest option out of the list u gave, but u could also get the 3tgte or 3t/2tg hybrid which would be by far the easiest option overall.

so what are the stats on the 3tgte and 3t/2t hybrid.
also how hard to fit a similar setup to this? http://members.optushome.com.au/activepete/twintur bo/jamiett.html
Plan for the car is an every day reliable driver and fortnightly maybe some drift/circuit work.
cheers

Up there and beyond the 1/2J I would think. I have seen a rover V8 fitted to a celica though...it's a bit smaller. (have one on the floor I could measure). 2/3Tgte would be easiest.

3tgte is efi turbo, it will bolt right up using an original engine mount that came with your engine or a customise the ta22 one
2/3t is a hybrid, using the 2tg head, block and 3t crank, pistons & conrods u build it up decide whether it be carby or efi, turbo etc

Rover V8 3.5 or 3.9 or 4.4 or 4.6 carb or efi.
3.5 carb only, early efi
3.9 efi only
4.4 efi only, from se late models (square headlights)
4.6 efi only, from hse late models ( " " )
though they can all be carbed, 4.6's are available new for less then a stroker kit. Just need heads (very plentiful and cheap) which you would port anyway. I have a 3.9 efi complete, pm me if you want to know more.

like every other job or conversion
how much do u want to spend $**********
now add 2000 bucks to ************* and u have
how much u will spend on the covnersion
which will give u ##################
now with ############# money u can determine what engine u can fit in yr car
its so easy
with the right amount of cash u can do anything
so what do u think yr budget is
remeber to add about 1000 or 2000 to yr budget because u always go over it

altho budget may be a concern its not too big a concern.
from start to finish im hoping to get away with 8k total build and considering i bought the car for $250 and have only spent $500 to get it roadworthy... a fairly modest amount is left.
at this point im really only worried about researching worthwhile engine swaps.
criteria possible engines must meet are...
1. Easy fit ... modifications kept to a minimum.
2. Descent power over the std 1600 suitable for intermediate drift track work (for fun only)
3. Reliable every day driver.
Now turbo / atmo / carb / efi is of little concern at this stage to me.
Cheers Guys

now, while my fist instinct is to scream at you to do a search, you sound like you actually have a realistic idea of what this will cost, so I'll be nice
btw - is $8k with you doing the work, or are you going to hand it over to a workshop and tell them what you want?
3t-gte will be a nice easy fit. They're also quite cheap, tho becoming slightly rare now (as are parts) as they are getting a bit long in the tooth. Expect to do a full rebuild on it first (due to age), and when you do that you might want to consider forgies, definitly an intercooler, then if you want to throw more money at it, a better turbo, bit of porting, and an aftermarket computer can net you upwards of 200rwkw!!
4a-gz(t)e is nice, but you'd have to go through the hassles of converting it to rwd, fabbing up engine mounts.... by the time you do all that, the money would most likely have been better spent fixing up a 3t-gte
3s-gte - well, it's the ultimate toyota 4 cylinder. To get it in there would require a fair bit of fabbing (as it's designed for a transverse mount, not a longitudinal one)... if you're paying someone else, it's not within your $8k budget. even if you do it yourself, it will take a fair while, and you'd have to be aware of the time required to do it.
forget about any inline-6 engine. the ta22 has a cute little engine bay, and a fat 1j/2j/7m will *not* fit in there without pretty serious mods, and not without passing your $8k budget and also ruining the handling of the car.
of course, everything depends on how much power you want. 100rwkw? 150? 200? more?

use the all alloy 3.4L 'mini-hemi' V8 from toyota - they came std in century's and have done so for 20odd years.
same weight as the rover V8, they use 5M pistons and with a little machining they take BFO chevy valves.
dellow have a bellhousing kit to adapt a supra 5spd to them as well.
the EKW group sell them for about $1500 for a good running engine - which i would refresh anyways - and they're in every state i believe.
