mk2 corona coupe (MX22)

Hi ,
just bought an mx22 - and am picking it up soon - I'm trying to find any information I can on these cars - but there doesn't seem to be much - any hints? I'm told that they are quite rare
mine is 74 with the original 2m - the original owner had it for most of its life- its pretty original - even down to the steel patterned hubcaps and general rust free and straight - good base for a mod - any tips?

Did you buy the one off ebay? Or the one in Sydney?
People here have done: 5MTE, 5MGE, 6MGE, 7MGTE, 1JZGTE, 2JZGE. I am aware of a 1UZFE coupe but haven't seen it.
Easiest high performance mod would be a 7MGTE. The JZ series motors all go in pretty easily with the right sump (or modifed sump) although the twin turbo motors will cause grief with the rear turbo fouling the steering box (so this calls for a single turbo conversion) or possibly a 1JZGTE VVTi single turbo jobbie.
I wouldn't waste my time with modifying the 2M (again).

I got the one of ebay - the guy was good enough to arrange for a blue slip - passed without too much hassell - I'm waiting for the carrier to deliver - I had a friend take more photos - the body is in really good nick - the interior needs doing - mechanically its pretty good

your mx23 looks good - sounds like body parts and trim generally are a pain to get, all up my coupe cost $1200, I didn't know much about them but the shape is like nothing i've seen - I certainly have never seen one on the road before - what are they generally worth?

wow - do you know what the production run was on them, and do you get much interets in yours?
I got rid of a pretty rusty XA GT - and swore this time what ever i got had to be rust free... this one is.
perhaps its better to keep the thing original but then again - good set of modern wheels , racing seats etc may be more interesting.
Did you repair yours and keep it original?

The Corona "Mark II" is not really a Corona. They got badged as that in the early models but they're really a Cressida (ie 6 cyl RWD with the 'X' chassis designation). The first time they used the Cressida name was with the MX32 which replaced the Mark II Corona - in Japan they still use the Mark II name.
Out of interest, the early sedan is called the MX10 and the late sedan is the MX13.
You are very lucky (some would disagree ) to have picked up an MX22 coupe as I have never even seen one in the flesh.
7MGTE is an easy swap, personally I am in the process of a 1JZGTE swap (note that the turbos on the 1JZGTE will not fit and you will need to do something custom in this area. I don't believe there are any such problems with the 7M as the turbo is mounted toward the centre of the engine.

On another note I believe that Minilites would suit the Mark II fantastically, and unless I can find a neat set of cheap second-hand wheels I will definitely be getting a set of these when money permits.

In Japan, they are actually just called a Mark II. They came in both 4 and 6 cylinder varieties and in different levels of trim. In Japan, the top spec models came with a fuel injected MEU, 5 speed box, full instrumentation (tacho, oil pressure fuel, temp, charge), PS, AC, cruise control, trunk opener, brake OK monitor, vacuum guage, intermittent wipers, self search AM/FM radio, power windows, etc.
In Australia, they were better appointed than your basic Corona but not to the high level of the Crown, hence Corona Mk2. The Cressida followed in late 1976, but the chassis code was MX32, just like the Mk2. In Japan they were (and still are) called the Mark II.
According to a Japanese guy I worked with, they remain one of the most popular cars in Japan.

Have a look and note what he says about interior, sounds like hes going to butcher and paint that rather immaculate interior.

I checked out the feature on your car - the interior looks great
it must have set you back a bit.Was the 4m originally in the car or did you get rid of the 2m?

The interior was the original..it was amazing...it had less than 100ks on the car and I was the third owner...it was in the same family for the first and 2nd so I count that as one then a short term owner who sold it to me 'cause his work shifts were cut and he needed the money for Uni fees...The new owner got a lot more too...I fixed the oil leak which was not all that bad..the drivers seat was split in one place and I got some matching material from the back seat of another MX and had a guy remake the seat ...it was like new as you saw..they also got the original handbook plus an engine manual plus a body manual and a chassis manual that I got from Rod Try and a box of bits I had collected -rubbers and such including a mint side mirror for the passengers side...it still had the original AM only radio which worked fine..I still have a set of lowered/HDuty Coils...not sure of brand..yellow...came out of a Coupe I found at Blacktown Pick and Pay...its long gone and the thing was full of window glass as well???...there is a mx 10 sedan there now and the yard has damaged the front guard on one side...it was perfect when I first saw it a few weeks ago..
Mine had the 4M engine as standard..

greg,
im assuming your talking about the blue mx13 we bought from you?
yeah my sister pranged it bad, we just finshed fixing it this weekend dad fixed it all up but we havent started painting it yet because of the rain we got
it had been in a prang before, the front right panel had a fair bit of plastic fill in it, dads straightened it all out and lead whiped the bad bits, its perfectly straight now and the panels nicer than before.
Also the dent in the back right has been panelbeated and painted to match.
there was a scratch in the back left which revealed some more plastic fill dad got rid of it all and fixed it properly.
remember it had a fuel problem?
We found out the carbi was missing a bearing somewhere, since getting that fixed it works fine.
we also cut out that bit of rust under the back right window.
Tiff isnt really happy with it anymore, she wants a TA22/RA23
MANUAL, she doesnt like the auto
so if you really miss it a lot im sure she will let you know first when she plans on selling it.
it's still in mint condition, exactly like in the pics.

G'day..Jesse...Yes I saw the plastic cover yesterday...I called in a week a go but no one was home..well I did say to Tiff if she was ever take any bits off it or going to sell it to come back and see me..The boggy bits were "professionally' repaired by Ryde Toyota when they sold it on behalf of the original owner/s estate but I think the job was just so so..I knew about them and they were pointed out at the time of sale to Tiff but obviously when the old girl got a shunt it was time to do it again..That corner of the back window had been plugged up with black goop for a long time to stop the water leak but It obviously made the penetration worse..I cleaned it up as best I could but it was job for the future as was the rust in one door and the guard that got crunched..The dent under the rear bumper was done by the owner before me as the mismatched paint would have told you..he had no idea about anything to do with the car..he had a breakin via a quarter glass in the back and had not fixed it because he did not know what to do..I fixed it when I first got it as wellas the oil leak that wasn't an oil leak..When its fixed please ask her to call in and we may be able to do a deal..no promises though..as for the carbie what do I say...the former owner put a newish fuel pump in but obviously that was not it..I mentioned the pump to your Dad at the time...It had fizzled on me once but I thought it was just shit in the fuel tank so I put in a new filter/filled the tank and drove it to Widsor and back - No problems and solid as a rock at 90kph+ Why does'nt she go manual??...it should be reasonably straight forward...lots of help in here and parts should not be too expensive..Those H/Duty coils...some new shocks and those 7 inch Cheviots would make i ta beatie to satisfy most.
By the way there is a T18 the same colour as yours at Pick N Pay

she reckens its a bit of a petrol muncher too she wants a 4 cylinder, she said she had a TA22 cane her off the lights one day, ever since shes wanted one.
too much work envolved in swopping it over to manual, dont really have the time and it wouldnt be worth the costs to get someone else to do it.
we took the hole back end off a t18 at pick any payless, i needed a new diff so we took it with the hole axle, springs shocks and a sway bar, is that the one?
im going alright for parts at the moment anyway
but i do need a set of new springs, the ones we got from p&p are too short and im also after some extractors.

If she sticks it in low and punch's it she will lay rubber but don't tell her that...I never did it but it will...and the diff will hold up no worries..TA23 @ P n PAY today that I know had a nice 2T in it with extractors..maybe the engine was pulled by them &is in the big shed...worth a 'phone call..
The 4 M can be thirsty no doubt..Others in here have done some improvements on 4M's for the same reason but not sure what..electronics at least from 5M-E.
The dark blue T18...Thats the one...was originally out the front as a car for sale but did not sell so it went to the yard...then you arrived...
