4ac timing settings and a question power range.

just wondering if someone could tell me what the timing settings should be on my ae86 stocko sprinter.
also there seems to be no power at all below 3,000rpm with a noticeable flat spot between 2k and 3k... almost like it has some sort of higher spec cam... its the first and only sprinter i've driven so i don't know if this is normal... i have a feeling my timing is out a little as a couple of times the car has had 'run on' or what ever you call it when i stop.

All (or nearly all) 4A-C engines have that flat spot installed at the factory. And theres no easy way to just tune it out that I've heard of. That just the way the standard engines are from what I've heard.
I know in my AE82 sedan, the 4A-C has little power low in the rev range as well, although the run on problem should be looked at.

it sounds crude but this is the way a lot of people have tld me " advance it until it pings and then back it off a bit "

the "advance it 'till it pings, and then back off some" method works fairly well actually.
as for this "2-3k factory flatspot",I'm on my second 4ac atm,and neither of them have/had this and I cane the butt of of them.
my immediate suggestion would be to get the thing tuned, replace the filters(fuel and air),and look into freeing it up some. do a search of the forum for suggestions on how to do this, there's been a little written about making the 4ac livable.
mine has had a few fairly simple improvements made to it,and it pulled 40kw atw on SAS's dyno the other week. that's with the std carb, cam, and internals. it's also 220k kms old btw... the engine isn't as sad as everyone makes out. a GE is obviously better, but the C isn't purely a boat anchor as many suggest.
Justin...

Yeah I have a timing gun.. Its my old mans.. and I have no idea how much they cost.. but they are simple to use..
to set the timing.. I undo the bolt on the distributor.. and then hold the light ofer the.. crank is it.. anyway there is a white mark there and the light flashes when the white mark goes past.. and you can see where its set at..
I adjust mine to about 2 on the scale, that gives me the best results.. anything over that and when I push the car I get pinging.. that thats not fun.
Good luck,
Sorry I cant help you with the struts

Yeah, old 4ac can take an amazing pounding - mine used to regularly hit 8000rpm trying to pass semis going downhill (yes thats one hell of a lot for an engine with stuff all airflow), plus the number of times it got cooked (due to a series of crook radiators) was unthinkable - for about 6 months I'd drive it till the temp gauge went off the edge, drive for about another 5-10 mins, stop, fill the radiator, then repeat the process. That particular engine is now going fine in someone elses car
As for timing, always just set the dizzy til it runs the best - loosen off the clamp, adjust it till it sounds good (open the throttle a few times, etc.), then drive it round the block. The other thing to watch out for is kick back on starting, retard it till it just stops doing that usually does the trick quite well.
Also I ran my old 4ac on LPG, so it used to put up with a hell of a lot more advance than most.
As for the flat spot, clean yer carbie!
