hi guys.
Just wondering how many of u have much experiance with set top boxes. I get pretty dodgy reception from my room. Being surrounded with 3 power boards and alot of magnetic fields. So yeah wondering how a HD set top box works. And what is involved. How much of an improvement would it give me in quality.
Assuming my current picture i get is approx 40% of DVD quality.
If i properly installed a set top box and whatever else involved what would i get?
Dudes that sell it that i've asked don't know squat.

Generally the thing with digital TV is that in theory, if you have some/average signal, you should be able to get perfect reception. You will never get any ghosting like normal analog tv.
The signal is broadcast in the same sort of format as a DVD (obviously in a different resolution) and the set top box has hardware decoders like a DVD player which capture this and convert it to pictures.
The quality of the image will be dependent on your TV, as unless you have a high definition TV, then everything is going to be scaled back to native PAL which is 576 horizontal lines and interlaced. Strictly speaking, any standard definition program will look like a DVD on a TV like this. A high definition program will look different, but not necessarily better in regards to the fact you can't display any more than the tv can display and information is just removed.
Does that make any sense, if not, what bits are you having trouble with?

I kinda get it. But the main fact is would is make my tv reception clearer? How hard is the installation and tuning? does it still run through transmission or is it hard wired?

It would make your reception most likely crystal clear, generally if you have any reception, you'll have perfect picture.
As for installation, tuning would be no harder than a VCR or TV, and it'd be a simple case of just plugging it into the AV ports on your TV.

I have a home theatre PC instead. I haven't played around with the boxes themselves much, but I can't forsee any bugs they would have.

I saw on a catalogue there is a Teac hd set top box for 199 or 299. And another which was rated the best out of all the set top boxes in any price range for about 600-700. Is it worthwhile going the best or is it just the same thing. Digital reception and similar quality. Or is it just another feature thing?

Awesome. I might just get a cheap one. Worth the risk. Keep my fingers crossed too. I might be out of a job within a month so i need something to entertain me at home. I'd be really pist if i gotta blow 200 bux of hard earned money on something that don't work as well as i'd like.
Thanks Justcallmefrank for all the info!
