The Crown Riseth Again Tue, 23 March 2004 23:01 Go to next message
Following the disasterous Foreign Object Damage suffered by the crown 5 weeks ago,(NEVER, EVER LEAVE YOUR AIRFILTER OFF.....) I finally regained enough enthusiasm to pull the engine down to
assess damage. Despite what the initial boroscope indicated (massive scoring of the bores) the reality has turned out to be that there is actually no damage to the bore, pistons or rings. (It seems the boroscope makes things look worse due to the magnification and powerful light source) The lack of compression was caused by the compression rings being gummed up by the fibreglass powder and being mechanically wedged into the ring grooves-hence preventing them from being shoved out onto the cyl walls and sealing up.

Short story-instead of needing a head gasket, 6 new pistons, a re-bore and rings (around $2000), I need only a head gasket. Yay. Cleaning and reassembly has commenced.

In addition-I've also come across a new turbo. A friend who was in japan recently mentioned he had picked up a TRUST turbo (TD06) from a rotor. I figured it'd be a medium sized one with rotaryish ratios (bigger rear/smaller front)-HOWEVER-once I saw the turbo in the flesh, it turned out to have a larger compressor than the T4 with a similar ex wheel and a
more free-flowing split pulse housing. I then had the turbo checked by bill keen yesterday. Turns out it is actually a trust TD07 that has freshly been rebuilt (virtually unused) with a new comp wheel and with a flow capacity of around 600 hp. When I told bill it could be mine for 650, he said 'bargain-snap it up'. (my T4 is worth 850-950 so the changeover will MAKE money..) He also mentioned that the TD07's are a
truck series from mitsubishi and have huge shafts and full 360 deg thrust bearings as standard. Looks like I've had a small win. Oh yeah, and Mike from MV has found me a suitable converter to replace the one it's got now.
That means it'll actually be able to use peak torque instead of flashing out to 4000+ once the boot is put into it.

it begins again......

That's good news regarding your engine. I read about it a couple days back on PF....very sad Crying or Very Sad.

Big win with the turbo. http://forums.toymods.org.au/images/message_icons/icon14.gif

It swallowed a bit of underbonnet fibreglass heat shield whilst the airfilter was off for a lousy 30 second blat around the block.

nasty, what bad luck

what power and torque does it make, and what will it make with the new turbo

Pulled out all the intake valves last night prior to giving it a port job on the weekend, and there is heaps of room for improvement. Smile

As for figures-it's all a bit arbitrary at the moment. First time it made 211 rwkw on 9-10 psi through the big converter. When it was on the dyno the second time with 13-14 psi the converter was flashing out to 4500. With the limit set at 5000 there wasn't much room for a power run so we didn't bother-at a guess though, i'd say 220-250 kw though. The torque should be over 700nm flywheel-and considering it took axle straps and 3 guys in the boot to stop it wheelspinning I'm pretty confident (and that was with a 3.23 ratio diff).

As for the new turbo, I'd like to hit the 300rwkw mark, although a power number isn't what I built this combination for. With the modified combustion chambers I'm aiming for 18 psi or so. Ultimately what I'm looking for is huge torque from as few revs as possible to give me a good ET.

Mind you of course, until I actually put my mone where my mouth is this is all just heresay and PkW (Pub kW). All should become a little clearer though when it goes back together with a stock converter and I get it to the track for a run-'when the flag drops, the bullshit stops' or so they say....

I wouldn't mind going in the odd dyno day once its done as well.

Anyway, we shall see.
