1jz Cressida died..HELP :( Wed, 24 March 2004 12:00 Go to next message
Okay guys...im pretty lost on this one.
Dropped some mates off at home after work today, stalled her up a little on takeoff, slow down for next corner about 50m up road, turn corner, up to about 4000RPM, car starts sounding like it did when i ran it with no exhaust and basically immediatly dies, roll to side of road. Okay...quickly checked I/C Pipework, seems okay (that wouldnt stop the car form running would it?) didnt have much time to do anything else cuz i had to goto cadets. Car will start after coaxing but dies pretty well straight away even if you give it heaps of throttle. Induction noise seemed louder thru the pod than normal but this maybe due to the fact that ive never stood in front of it when its been revved up lol. So umm yeah, im running a walbro 500hp pump, full tank of optimax, stock 7m-GE zorst (could the cat have collapsed? or its possibly full of turbo parts?), stock IC and HKS pod. Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Troy

Damn, hope its nothing serious!

Im opting for this engine for its tuning potential, and most importantly, reliability. They are reliable arnt they guys??

Very, as long as the turbos are ok.

Vac line on the Map is ok right? If that comes off it wouldn't run very well.

Stuffed Fuel Filter can cause this too.

Thanks for all the info guys...Wastegate, could a stuffed filter just cause a sudden stop like mine? i havent changed it since i got the cut cuz they said a genuine part number matching-one would be six weeks away...the 7M-ge filter looks similar, would this fit?

One more thing we found this on the road...no idea what it is/where itcame from/if it even is off my car lol.

That is the timing belt tensioner

If that was near the car when it died, i'm not surprised

Its kinda vital for keeping the timing belt tight.

Find out why it fell out, put it back in, and away you will go
(This is after you have reset your cam timing of course)

yep, definitly the timing belt tensioner - I took mine off not that long ago.

and while it may look and sound simple, believe me it will take a little while Smile

edit: you're lucky the 1jz is a non-interference engine. if it were a nissan engine, you'd more than likely be looking at a full rebuild!

Note that it's not as simple as re-installing the tensioner; the belt has obviously slipped so you're going to have to pull the timing cover off and align everything properly again. It's a bitch of a job but with enough patience you should be able to manage it.

Also check the belt for damage; it might need replacing.

Gotta love Toyota's.

I would change the timing belt anyway, that way you know its done. Change the spark plugs while your at it.

Interesting that someone said they are non-interference engines because:

I have 2 1JZ's (a spare and one in the car).

While they were both out with cam belts off, on the spare one you could turn the crank over fine (non-interference).

On the engine I have got in the car at the moment, when it was on the engine stand with no cam belt I did the same thing and it could not turn over all the way, so I thought it must be some of the valves stopping it (interference).

Is it only non-interference on stock cams?? Would higher lift cams cause interference??

Strange!!!

The non VVTi engines are non interference with stock cams. I'm led to believe 9.5 mm lift and 272 degrees duration is the limit for the engine remaining non interference (in a 2JZ anyway).

The VVTi engines ARE interference.

LOL Laughing at finding the tensioner on the ground. Good work!

Replace the timing belt. It's good maintenance even if it isn't fucked. Loctite the tensioner retaining bolt. You'll need a vice and a 1.5mm diameter nail to keep the tensioner in place as you set up the timing belt.

i would have to say that the clearance between the pistons and valves is very small...most likley something like .050 or so (just a guess) and any cam wilder than stock would cause it to hit...I just looked at where the tensioner came from, it seems that one of the bolts has removed itself, causing the other to load up....which led to it shearing off....lucky there's plenty left to remove with some vice grips Smile
Oh and i did replace the belt when i got the cut (about 2000km old) =\
Should i replace it again? And also, what parts am i likley to have lost apart from the tensioner?
Cheers guys,

Troy
