icon1.gif  AE86*engine question Wed, 24 March 2004 14:59 Go to next message
this may sound stupid, but what advantages does the red top 100kw have over the 86kw blue top? yes i know 14kw (no shit) BUT this is my delima
1)100kw engines are about $400+++ more than blue tops.
2)you can get rwd blue tops (=easy conversion into my sprinter)

all i want to know is how much of a difference these 2 engines will make in my car.
also for the money i save on the rwd blue top conversion, compared to the ff 100kw conversion, could i make it *close* to the power output of the 100kw? (already have exhaust +filter)
say with 1.5k spending money on the blue top.
or am i better off saving and waiting until i get a 100ke smallport???

thanks

Japanese import RWD 4AGE's are 97kW, not 86kW.
Very common mistake.

The Jap spec RWD 4AGE having more power than the Aus spec 4AGE Is that only due to the ECU, or is there another difference in the engine?

97kw! never knew that, never even seen that anywhere before!
so therefore for the $$ i save by getting a rwd JDM blue top i could easily gain that 3kw and it would be even simpler to put into my car?

guess now im looking for a jdm big port!

11kw from an ecu? that a fair gain, AUS spec must be detuned to the core.
this power figure is on japan 103RON(something like that) compared to our 98RON fuel isn't it.
anyone got one of these in their sprinter? how does it go?

thanks for your help

I have a jdm rwd bluetop, im happy with it.

I have a dyno sheet from about 6mths ago when it was running to good and it says 55kw and 180nm at the rears.

I havent been in a fwd bluetop in a ae86, ive been assured that there is little bit of a difference.

For some strange reason my jdm sounds different to the fwd, even with same exhaust and same air filter.

while were on the topic of performance, what sort of performance can i expect out of my planned red top conversion? (im aware its not going to be a drag car) ie. will i give things like ET pulsars a run for there money or do i have no chance? ive never been in a twinky sprinter.

so im basically looking at 55rwkw from the blue top, which is about the same as the red top right?? how much was your blue top? what kind of performance am i looking at here? GTI swift? how long does it wheelspin in 2nd when you flatshift it( Very Happy )?
and tell me if im wrong but im guessing that there are no rwd 4age motors that arn't jap imported (i just dont want to be jibbed 11kw from the engine supplier) how can you tell the jap motors?

There will/should be a fan on the water pump and the throttle bodie will be at the timing belt end of the motor (facing the front) were as the fwd will have the throttle bodie facing the rear of the sprinter. These are the ones i remember, there have been more.

The cars i have eatin/beaten so far:

All n/a lancers i come up against, 5 so far, even the 1.8ltrs

All n/a excels i come against, 4-5 (especially fat chicks with body kits, i love beatin her)

3 v6 commodores

2 gti swifts (just, there pretty quit) and 1 non gti (the owner thought it was, but i proved him wrong)
1 ea falcon v8 (i think his motor wasnt in the gratest condition)

1 89 (i think) prelude

1 96 v6 3ltr magna (wife)

Yet to try - Silvias, 180sx.

I dont like/want to brag on too much but im alot quicker then most people/road user think.

I think you'll be plesently suprised by the acceleration.

Not as quick in 3rd and 4th as id like it too be, maybe some cams?

its only a 1.6L dude.. you cant expect torque without some forced air!

The 100kW conversion really isnt as hard as everyone makes it out to be! Its just a cutnshut, some messing around with pipes and hoses (easy as), and a spigot bearing. How hard can that be?

They are also very readily available.

I like it, its got great throttle response, plenty of pickup in most gears/speeds, and does wonders of stunning most cars.

reading this is makeing me anxious cause i get to drive my sprinter in a week with a jap-spec 4age

oh and the jap fuel vs ours would that make the kw's drop?

thanks ppl!
what kind of performance gains are expected with cams + ecu???
where is the power going to be in the rev range with slightly bigger cams? what do these engines rev out to? any major/common problems???
this is the bigport version right? so therefore turbo'ing wouldn't be that hard, running low boost with stock internals (maybe low comp, pistions etc)
