42mm Webers VS. 45mm Solexes on 18r-gu Wed, 24 March 2004 15:09 Go to next message
Hi, As you all know i run the solexes n standard crap on my engine. I finally got me some webers, Should i expect any highly noticable difference between the 45mm solex's and 42mm webers?>
Sounds? Performance? Anything?
Thanks
Steve

Sounds? Probably not... maybe slightly louder.

Performance? That will only improve if you get the engine properly tuned by an expert. If you just slap on some different carbies you may actually LOSE performance.

Fuel economy? You don't even want to know. Smile

Depends on how modified your engine is. If it's a stocky, I suspect you will lose midrange. It'll possibly sound louder and therefore seem faster.

I think it largely depends what choke sizes you've got, and how well tuned the engine is.

Also, I thought the standard solexes were 40mm on a 18-RG?

The std solexes on 18rg's were 40mm (large venturis were smaller that that.
Solexes also came in a 44mm, but these are a bitch to find.

The solexs on the 18rg's were the larger ones the 40's came on the 2tg's (maybe 44's). You'll also find that the solexs will be better than the webbers all round (except maybe sound) because they are designed for the engine. With the right tune best option for sure.

Sorry guys tend to disagree there bout the solexes being better than webers as you may find that due to the huge range of jet/choke/venturi etc sizes the webers will be a lot easier to fine tune and will certainaly deliver more power than the std. solexes.cheers nev

Here we go again....... the old webers vs solex argument!

Im just going to add my 2c quickly, and then watch from afar.

I put 45DCOE webers on my 18R-GU, and having both solexs and webers at my disposal i chose the webers for the sound and to say i have webers...nothing else. Fuel economy was shithouse, driving to Dubbo was about 400Ks to a tank!
