idle to high Wed, 24 March 2004 15:50 Go to next message
Hey guys im new to this forum. I just got a problem which has been bugging me for a while. When i turn the car on my idle is way to high it will sit on about 1600+ it varies. I was told toyotas are common of this untill the engine warms up. But my idle can stay on that rev for a good hour or so. Then after the engine is really warm , or i give it a bit it will drop to about 900-1000.
The other thing is when the idle is that high I get this really loud rattling noise comming from the engine bay somewhere and it is very annoying especially at the lights. And finally on a normal/hot day my car will start first go, but at night/cold day my car will not kick in first go, but guranteed it will start second time i turn the key?? what could this be? the starter motor?
Any ideas? BTW i forgot to meantion the car is a 87 Camry EFI

Cheers,
Dave

You have the 3S-FE more than likely...that engine has a fairly complicated system for controlling idle speed. Your best bet would be to just look at the idle screw (it's hidden underneath a little rubber cap that is just near the throttle body) and try turning that to see if it helps.

Check all the vacuum hoses as well...

As for your cold start problems...you could have a clogged cold start injector, or semi-leaky distributor cap, dodgy ignition leads -> there's quite a number of possibilities.

High idle can also be caused by a very dirty throttle body, when your on and off the accelerator during normal driving it just collects more muck. Get your hands on some throttle/carby cleaner and give it a very good clean.

Might as well spuirt some on your cold start injector will your there.

Yep its the 3S-FE, I tried adjusting the screw on the throttle body, and it didnt do much while the car was idling, but it did lower the idle once the car was warm.

Ill check the vacuum hoses and also drop into supercheap or someshi* and get some throttle cleaner, where exactly is the cold start injector located i gots no idea.
Thanks alot for that guys. I'll try these things out

It'll be on the inlet manifold somewhere, im not exactly sure where but there will be part of the loom that runs to it, there will be also a small fuel line, so sart at the fuel rail and work your way up..

Yo,

Could be the Thermostat stuck open.

Does the car reach normal operating temperature within about 3 minutes from a Cold start?

The ECU will keep the idle high if the Coolant temperature is low.

Happened to me on the ST162.(3SGE)

FWDCelica it takes a little more than 2 minutes for it to reach its normal temp. How can I check the thermostat? What did you do to fix the problem?

cheers

Mate,

If it gets to normal temperature in about 2 minutes I don't think it is the Thermostat.

You need to take the Bottom Radiator Hose off. The thermostat is behind the Water Outlet. Very close to the Oil Filter. 2x10mm nuts hold it on.

I could drive for 30 minutes and the Temperature gauge had hardly moved. Thermostat was stuck open : replaced and all good. Temperature gauge up to normal in 2 minutes.

Could also be the Water temperature sensor. Tells the ECU what temp the water is and turns the idle speed up if it's cold.

Or could be the Idle Speed Control Valve. Tells the ECU when to turn off the Cold Start Injector. You could disconnect the wire on the Cold Start Injector and see if the Idle Speed drops.

Or run the On Board Diagnostics. Read the manual for that one !

Cheers
T.

i have an 88 camry and it does similiar things. idles at about 1500rpm for the first few minutes and sometimes continues to do it for about 10 minutes. i am interested in finding this 'cold start injector'. My car is the same when it comes to starting it cold. i can crank the engine over for atleast 10 seconds before it will start on a cold morning or if i havent used it so far that day. But if i simply turn the key on and off really quickly, so the starter motor hardly even has a chance to spin, and then try cranking, the car starts instantly. Its got me confused and i must admit it doesnt look good when you are proud of your car and it takes 2 turns of the key for it to start. Any help with this will help me out too.

ive got the same issue but ive got a 4A-GZE
tends to have to be really cranked for a while, then when it finally decides to start, it farts around at 400rpm for 3-5seconds and then finally goes up to 2000 and then setlles around 1500 for 30mins of normal highway driving until it decides to idle at 800.

runs well too rich too. rear bumper gets covered in crap Mad
