UHF/VHF cordless handhelds Thu, 25 March 2004 00:48 Go to next message
Hey dudes,

I am looking at buying a UHF/VHF handheld. Mainly for the cruises that we ahve with you guys. Can you recommend a good one? What does it mean when it says "3km range line of sight". Does that mean that it has a 3km range, but if you cannot "see" the person then you cannot talk to them. ie in the city and they are around a couple of corners.

Thanks

3km would be the maximum range you'd expect to acheive. It is when you pretty much have no obstacles between you and the other unit. If you are in a built up area the CB will still work but the range will reduce.

EG: Me and my bro got about 3/4 of a km out of our little toy walkie talkies when I was out in the boat and he was on land. Those things wouldn't work 200m in the suburbs.

Check out the Witzl's latest offering in the parts for sale section (I think). The 1.5w UHF would be perfect for what you need, and provide good coverage (I wouldn't expect the full 8km range) but would be more than adequate in the city.

I've got a pair of the 0.5w ones, and whilst they are good, I would love to upgrade to the 1.5w because occasionally they just don't reach far enough for my liking.

If you would like a good quality 2-way handheld check out the GME TX-610. http://www.gme.net.au/land/tx610_main.html
I can do these for $107 Inc GST.
