Jaycar audio gear...any good?

HEy guys I'm interested in getting some audio gear (12" sub and a set of 4" for the front doors) and I was just wondering how Jaycar stuff stacks up against the more known brands (Sony, Pioneer, MTX etc)....looking around and it seems that the Jaycar stuff isn't much cheaper these days than the brand names, is it better quality or not?
Cheers

From what I have been told, as long as you stick with the response stuff its pretty decent. Got some 6.5" response splits going in at the moment. Almost finished

You have to understand that generally Jaycar has operated to a different business model to most marketing-driven car audio companies; probably a result of its different corporate background.
It won't come with flashy led's, names like 'Xplod' (shudder) and Super X DBAss or other nonsense, but it's reputed to be no-nonsense reliable product.
I'll be running two Jaycar 2x150 amplifiers in my system.

There is more to car audio than this, try visiting somewhere other than the Yellow store or the Red store.

I set up a mate of mine's car with 5" Response co-axials front and back (off a 4x45w Kenwood head), and a $200 Jaycar sub with a bridged 4x50w Jaycar amp and the result is really quite awesome. Considering the total cost was somewhere around $1500 including a 10 stacker, the bang-for-your-buck factor is amazing.
I've also run a pair of the Response 6x9s in the parcel shelf* of my Swift for a number of years and i'm very happy with them.

good value for money
but still cheap product and wont compete will bigger brands
their coax with those moving tweeters are meant to be heaps good, but quite expensive aswell.
their amps heaps of people have used them and some are happy with them, though plenty people have blown them up and has fault here and there aswell
their response double magnet subs are quite good, one car used to run four of these and has won many spl comps
if u have small budget then go for it, for slightly more money u can go coustics, pg octanes, alpine mrp, etc...

Ok my next question is it worth spending the extra (and its quite a bit extra) to get the "expensive 5" speakers" or are the "Cheap" ones almost as good? Are the more expensive speakers worth it?
Cheers

Look at the frequency response outputs that come with the speakers when (hopefully they were) tested. That will be your first clue.
You know the old saying, if you want quality you have to pay for it.
On the other hand you might luck out with some nice speakers from BMW wreck...........

dont even think about getting the CHEAP speakers... they are turd vibrators that occasionally make what can be called "sounds".
Dont forget that the Hi-Quality coaxials are sold EACH - meaning you have to buy two to make a pair. Hence the cost is highish. But when you compare them to what is available in the coaxial and split system market at the same price - they are unbeatable!
For a good sound, easy install (OEM fit) and moderate price, they are hard to pass by. Ultimately, a car is not the kind of environment you are going to get high quality sounds from.
The amps yes occasionally do blow up or have a fault, but they are cheap, and Jaycar do have a 1 year warranty which returns the goods usually within a two week period. I challenge ANY other car audio company to have that speedy a turnaround for a warranty repair!
**i used to work at a "brand name" car audio place, and the best warranty turnaround times were about a month from Blaupunkt.... the rest were up to 2 months and sometimes even 3!!
P.S. Gimme a PM if you want to know more, and not questions like "wat about da BOSS 100000W amps bro? How good is dat?"
P.P.S. For those that dont know, i work at jaycar

THE WITZL: Are you able to advise me on perhaps if I can do much about my Kevlar response speakers which I suspect I may have got a metal file in between the pole piece and cone of 1 woofer?
Would they be able to take a look at it perhaps?

DUUDE! it is seriously more work than its worth to "fix" a speaker. Ripping out a voice coil and putting it back is no easy task dude.... it SUCKS!
I would try to get it out another way - like shaking it perhaps? i dont know how the hell you got some metal down there though mate!

I suspected that but being in between, its obviously stuck to the magnet piece on the inside. So no shaking will get it out and Im not sure either how it could have got in there. Was like it when I first plugged it in.
Cant say that theres really is anything in there but on certain types of bass (even softly) there is a bad scratching noise. Only that speaker does it and it sounds terrible.

dude, same thing happened to a 12" sub of mine a while ago. I just kept using it and after a week or so of scratchy sound it dislodged, and the sub is working perfectly a year later. You might be as lucky as me!

This is for The Witzl: I was thinking of buying an amp from Jaycar, the Response amp. Its the 4x100 WRMS or 2x200WRMS at 2ohms or something like that and its $329, is it any good? I mean as in reliable to run 2 subs?
Thanx.

I have a 4 x 100 amp that runs 2 12" pioneer subs. The amp is rated to give each of the 2 bridged channels 300RMS but i'm pretty sure they actually put out more like 320RMS.

wilbo, i was looking at buying the ten inch version of that sub, but i got the "blue dual voice coil" one and am really happy with it (its in a sealed box with a Qtc somewhere in the vicinity of .7071, and built to golden ratios!!).
i got the dual coil sub because,
it has a lower natural frequency,
it has a flat dudt cap (i know this would make SFA difference, but i like flat dust caps.)
what do you mean not as cheap as you think through electus, thats where i got mine, and it was, um quite a bit cheaper.
if you need reassuring, see what the same money would buy you in sony Xplod gear, or some other shitty brand.

The profile subs i would also call turd vibrators
Stick with the double mag 12" (aka "precision"), the carbon fibre 12" or the 15" precision.
As far as the 4x100Wrms amp goes... we have discontinued it now (dont know why so dont ask) and there are only a few left in some stores. It sux bad cos i wanted one too.

Just thinking that jaycar wholesale would prbly be cheaper than an order of one through electus, you are right tho there is quite a saving through electus
Yeah the 10" that you mention is (10" metal coated) catching my eye now, as is the 12" carbon fiber one (this is originally what I was going to get but the box size required is steering me off, I want my boot back!)

Electus IS Jaycar Wholesale... Jaycar splits its retail and wholesale into two companies years ago...
Electus is cheaper than retail (obviously), however, I would definately talk to Witzl before going to Erectus... I mean um Electus.

Thanks mate I do know that electus supply jaycar, but with group buying and staff discount I'm pretty sure that Witzl will be cheaper and still be able to make something for himself to make it worth his while.
Cheers
