Where to buy G series Gears? Fri, 26 March 2004 23:10 Go to next message
I have rang about 4 billion wreckers in Brisbane after a 4.1 ratio G series center and the first question they ask is, "what year" so I tell them its a RN27 diff and they say "sorry we wont have any centers that old. What the fuck???? I thought all G series centers were the same?
FUCK FUCK FUCK

Anyway, anyone know where I can get some 4.1 gears?

You should know by now that calling a wrecker for any specific information is an exercise in futility. 4.1 G series gears are out there, but your average brain-dead wrecker wouldn't have a clue. Your only option is to do a wreckers crawl and look for yourself.

BTW you can buy these gears new from the US.

Yeah I was thinking about buying the gears from over seas but just thought I would search locally first.
I just rang another wrecker just then and he said he was happy for me to come down there and have a play with the centers they have.
This is the main problem around here, not many of them let you out the back to do your own searching anymore Sad
Anyway, do you think you would notice much difference on the road between a 4.1 and a 4.3?

there will be a noticable difference, my car has a 4.3 instead of the normal 4.1. it depends on the gearing each paticular car has, but the most gain you will get (speaking from my own experience) will be in acceleration from over 100km a hour. if i can keep with a car in straight line to 100k's an hour i allways absoultley spank them from there onwards. its probably extra usefull if you ever intended to take it to the track, shrinks the gap between you and more powerfull cars better set up cars considerably.

The title asks specifically about gears, so I answered specifically about gears.

Yeah I know. But it was easier to get a complete center at the time.

Cool1,
The point is moot now, but here is a quick rundown on Hilux rear diff final drive ratios (not exhaustive, just generally speaking):

LN/RN 30-40 Series 1978 - 1988

LN40/41 4.300
LN30/36/40/46 4.375
LN36/46 4.875
RN30/33/35/40/45 4.875

(Double listing means that more than one ratio can be found
in a particular model).

LN 50-60 Series 1983 - 1989

LN50/55 4.300
LN56 3.900, 4.100, 4.875
LN60 4.300, 4.555
LN61 4.300

LN10# Series 1988 - 1997

LN10# 4.300

This is rough but it lines up with what I have found at wreakers in Perth W.A.

So, what Hilux was your 4.1 from ?

Cheers,
Mitch.

Then that was from most likely a YN85 ('Grinner' - Petrol 1.Cool or an LN85, the diesel.

Cool 1 : not that I know of, most likely a LN60.

Ribbo: not surprised at all, variations will come up all the time. I did not cover the Surf models with LSD's. Suffice to say, if you hunt around and count teeth on enough crown wheels and pinion's you will find G series 3.9, 4.1 and 4.3 LSD's on various Hilux's. Patience is the key here....

My listing was not exhaustive and never can be, its a rough guide so that you can ask the right questions and give the right answers to the wreckers when you are on the phone. The rest is up to you.

Mitch.

I drive an RN85 model 1995 2WD 2.4 petrol Hilux cab chassis ute. It has 4.1 G series in the rear as standard. That may assist you when hunting for ratio's.
Smile
FYI.
Steve

PS open centre, not LSD
