MA61 DIFF TRANSPLANT

Hi Fella's
I got an MA61 with a 7mgte and the diff in it just seems too short for any highway action. At 110 on the highway I'm sitting on 3grand. The LSD is great for around town but the car has enough power to support the need for a longer running diff.
I really want the LSD with a longer run in it. Is there any centres that go into the rear end of an MA61 that are too LSD and have a run of about 3.7-3.9. I heard there is an early Tarago LSD with a longer run or even something from the nissan family that may fit (but didn't get a model no.)
Any help would be great.

I think some RA65 Celicas came with the ratio you're looking for. Of course they're all open diffs, but you can use the crown wheel and pinion from the Celica and combine it with the Supra LSD centre. I've heard of people doing this in the US, apparently it's not very hard.

Mich, The auto diff is 3.9 and as norbie says you can easily bolt the open diff crown wheel and pinion onto the lsd hemispere. Only takes 1hour after the diff is out.

So why do manuals say under the bonnet they have a :
313 diff code that equates to a 4.1 ratio
auto's say 293 diff code that equates to a 3.9 ratio
I'm totally confused???? It just cant be possible.

All the auto's I've seen have the 4.1:1 diff.
All the manuals have had the 3.9:1 diff.
This has pretty much been the same case with everyone I've spoken to.

yeah mine came with the 5 speed from factory(and still has it) and the ratio is 3.9..I have a similar prob as birdofpray but don`t see the point of changing to 3.7 as it`s going to make stuff all difference.I`m only guessing he`s running the 4.1 so maybe the 3.7 might just be worth changing to??hmm

Yep sorry got it round the wrong way but i was sure there were different ratios for manuals and auto's.
You couldn't have the same diff for both. Just wouldn't be right.
Maybe only the ones that come with 2j's are 4.1's hey?

4.1 sucks in a supra mines doing 3100@110 should be 2200 with a manual. but does pull to 200kph with a claged 5m
(something is maken a clunk clunk sound up the back diff or tailshaft is the question, does not matter tho white supra is in retirement, black one will be rolling with a locked T series till i get a G or F under it)
with the tall .7? OD in the auto i was cruseing at 2100@110 with the 3.909 and that was spot on just unlocking the torque converter it would motor up most hills in OD with the 5M (was nice being able to basicly split each gear with the auto)
if you aim for 110@2200RPM in 5th with your 7m-gte you will be right in the meat of your turbo so 220@4400rpm should pop up nicely whats the redline 7000?
Cartest is VERY good for working out gearing

Actually I'd be interested to find a good source of higher ratio F series diffs... methinks a 4.1 may be a little short for the 2JZ. Might have to visit the wreckers some time soon and check out some build plates...

You could try to find a 2.8GT Celica XX shell, they had 3.7:1 diffs.

OK, having just looked at the two side by side I think this is going to be a really dumb question but I'll ask anyways!!
Can you put the LSD centre from a G series into an F series???

Hey Guys, If your really keen on a new diff i'm sure that you can modify a diff i have
It's 9", with 2.75:1 gears! LSD also... so its pretty good for top speeds, with a 3 speed auto its fine on the free way, but then trhe 351 isnt a revvy motor
my $0.02

Yep, just the stock diff for now. If I break it I'll think about upgrading (probably try to get a Mk3 G-series diff in there) but I reckon it will hold up OK if I don't do anything stupid (eg burnouts etc).
