Hey guys, Im now in a frenxy in what ECU to use.
I was going to go for the Haltech E6X, and I know most you guys with 1JZGTE conversions use this, but now Im thinking of going to Autronic. Guys with the Haltech, how do you find it? Cold start, Economy etc? Considering id be driving it pretty much daily, would the fuel bill kill me by using a haltech???

It's all about the tuning. A good tuner who knows what he's doing will get your cold start, idle and fuel economy as good as a factory engine. A crappy tuner will make your car run like, well, crap. The computer used doesn't make much difference in the end, it's all about the tune!

Ha-ha!
Honestly, I'm not hijacking the thread! I'm currently in a similar dilema. Was considering E6X - which I thought was about $1600. Seems I was off by nearly $500. So, I'm just wondering if there is anything between the Haltech and Microtech/Wolf? I'm guessing Autronic will be more than Haltech?
Looking forward to hearing some recommendations!
TIA,
Justin

Amen brother
Celica-sue: You can't just look at the raw price of the computer, some computers may require changing sensors etc. which could become expensive.

it certainly isn't about the cost of the computer
afaik, the worlds fastest 4Cyl is powered by a Megasquirt (around 320mph? and it's a 1.3L!!).. it's all about the tune...
another VERY important issue is the aftermarket service.. some companies are very poor in this area, while others you pay for it..
if you have the $$, go a Motec, you will not regret it. around 3K or so? check www.capa.com for prices.
as for others... who knows.. been a fair few comments lately of Wolf triggering not being so great but.....
wait for "Ultramegasquirt" LOL

I certainly dont have the $$$ for a Motec, So I think I will stick with the Haltech. I know a good tuner/Retailer (JEM) that Id trust with my car.

Yeh, if nothing else comes along, I'll probably go Haltech as well. And try to convince myself that I'm saving in the long run (more tuners familiar with them and ease of opperation, so faster tuning). And the big kiler on its price is the 3 bar MAP sensor - but I've heard that it is quality stuff.

I have a Haltech (but not on a 1JZ, its on a 4AGTE), its as good as any other ECU as far as tuning mixtures & ignition at all load/rpm points, however, don't be caught up by Haltech's claims of being able to run in closed loop mode, or controlling a stepper style idle control, as neither of these functions are particularly flash...
Autronic have a lot more "adjustability" for the auxiliary items such as those above, but doesnt have great support, so dont go for it unless you plan to have it installed, setup & tuned by a reputable workshop with experience on autronic, such as Ray Hall or Quickfit Motorsports.
Haltech on the other hand is very simple to understand, and the software is simple to use/tune. All of the sensors are based on GM Delco parts also, they they are relatively inexpensive to replace. I have had excellent support & tuning service from J.E.M also.
