Front struts (again) - What's a few threads between friends? Mon, 29 March 2004 09:16 Go to next message
This is just a quick question I'm asking for safety's sake.. I have recently acquired some new front shocks for the Corolla (inserts) and have also had to get a set of original strut housings as I previously had aftermarket units that were not rebuildable.

If you take a look at the two pictures below it might explain the reason for me asking the question:

The first is a picture of just the strut housing with the end-cap screwed all the way down. (The end cap was supplied with the new insert).

The second picture is of the strut housing with the insert in, and the end cap screwed all the way down.

Notice the fact that there is a decent 2 - 2.5 threads still exposed above the top of the strut housing?

What I mainly wanted to ask here is:
- Is this normal?
- Is this safe?

I've never actually seen the original struts before now, so I don't know what they would normally look like with the shock absorbers in, and I don't know if other people who've changed them over have come across the same thing.

Probably about 3/4 of the thread on the end-cap is actually screwed through inside, but I was still just a bit worried/curious as to whether it's safe to put in the car like this..

Any help guys??

look on the bottom of the shocks, most will have a sacrificial stub that you can cut down to the right height, trim it down a little at a time or measure accurately what you need to remove and trim it till the cap is a down firmly, the cap will probhably be ok how it is but its best to fit it correctly if you can.

Its perfectly normal. All the TA22 struts I have seen have a few threads protruding the strut casing. It was also exactly the same when I purchased some new Boge inserts which came with new end caps.

As Michael said, grind a bit off the bottom, there's usually some provision to do so, but just make sure you don't grind off too much, there's nothing worse than a shock that can rattle around inside the strut.
It took me ages to work out what that bloody noise was. Smile

Thanks all Smile I at least feel a lot better about it now even if I leave it the way it is..

Am a bit hesitant to tackle the task of cutting down the stubs at the bottom. I really don't want to risk taking too much off, or getting the left and right at different lengths. I also don't have immediate access to the right equipment either. Confused

With a bit more time I might be able to cut them down in length properly, however I want to get the things in and aligned before Easter (ie. less than two weeks now!!). Only have a benchtop or angle grinder here at home and I'm not going to attempt it with either of those (far too hit & miss for my liking - especially if you've seen me weilding a grinder!).

If it will be OK, then it might have to do for now until I get a bit of time to pull them out and get them over to a friend's place where I'll have access to a lot more equipment! Very Happy

Thanks again!!
