ST204 turbo 4wd conversion
|

I am wanting to convert my ST204 non-turbo Celica to a turbo 4wd version. I have access to a complete dressed ST205 GT4 front cut with rear diff etc.
Will the centre shafts, rear diff, axels etc ... simply bolt on or an I in for a world of problems?
Has anyone done this before?
cheers

If it's anything like the floorpans of the previous GT4's, the chassis will be totally different requiring uber work to fit all the stuff underneath. Probably not worth it sorry dude.

I'd agree with JCMF
it'll be easier, and ALOT cheaper to sell up and buy a GT4
OR
just stick in the 3sgte and stay FWD only

Cyber-punk, will the 2wd gearbox stand up to the extra power?
benmeyer, its a long way from Brisbane to Canberra but I guess you are paying for the freight. Make an offer if you want it. The panels are mine though but you can have the rear diff etc if you need it.
I have been doing some more research on some US sites. They all seem to think it is a big problem to convert. I may look into a long rear cut from a Jap ST205 for the next container.
Let me know if anyone has any specific info. ie is the tunnel big enough for the 4wd? Will the engine+ 4wd gearbox fit in a non-turbo engine bay?
Thanks again

Ask the likes of alltrac.net - the guys there have heard of attempts in the states but not one have worked as " bolt in "
your better off buying a Gt4 already complete mate - or put the 3sgte in as FWD only ..
OR get a busted Gt4 like say a 185 or a 165 and putting the 205 running gear in that ..

Yeah I am on the alltrac site now. Some guy called roo has been shown how to convert a gen 6 (St204) into 4wd easily. They seem to think St185's or 165's are a waste of time though.
I guess I will try to sit everything under the car and see if I have room to mount things up. Container should clear customs by the end of the week so I can try on the weekend.
Any more info appreciated.

Don't forget, you'll probably need the complete wiring harnesses as well.
Not having done such a conversion, I'd be tempted to backup the advice of others and buy a GT4. You'll have better resale and equipment levels as well

Do you know what an ST205 GT4 is selling for these days!! I'll take my chances building one. I have all the parts I need (except maybe a floorpan) including the ST204 donor vehicle with 90,000kms, dressed ST205 GT4 front cut with 80,000kms, rear drive train and I have spent well under $10K.
I doubt there would be anything electronic related to the rear diff setup only maybe the fuel pump connection.
I'm still hoping 'roo' from alltrac.net comes through with the info to save me heaps of time.
Thanks for the help so far.

Keep in touch Dunkymonkey. I will let you know what is left over depending on which way I go.
If the conversion is really too hard then the turbo front cut will be for sale, otherwise the non-turbo 3SGE+ fwd manual box+ computer+ wiring+ dash etc will be available.
I am working a sourcing a long rear cut from an ST205 just in case I need the floor pan. I want one ASAP and can't (OK don't want to)wait another 6 or 7 weeks to get one from Jap land. Anybody got one lying around??

not sure if your current gearbox will be up to it, but investigate SW20 gearboxes, they came with 3SGTE's, whilst not 100% sure that one will suit your needs i'd hazard a guess that it will

Where is the ST204 fuel tank located?
In the earlier FWD Celicas, it was in front of the rear wheels, but relocated behind the rear wheels on the GT4.
Dunno about the ST205 GT4.
On my ST190 96 Caldina (very similar floorpan) the fuel tank is in front of the rear wheels for both FWD & 4wd, so for my car, I simply have to replace the FWD fuel tank with the 4wd one (has a hump for the tailshaft to go through). The trans tunnel on my car is already big enough, but I have to change the engine x members too.
The ST205's also have the superstrut double wishbone suspension which the FWD doesn't, so you may have to check whether this bolts on too.
And I definitely recommend putting the ST205 brakes on!!
If the fuel tank is an issue, I'd go turbo FWD using a MR2 turbo SW20 gearbox, & sell the ST205 GT4 box.
I'd thinking about buying this off you.

welding a 4wd floor-pan into your car won't be cheap. just buy a genuine gt4. people only do crazy shit like that when you can't get the car here.

Thanks for the ideas guys!
Engine is definately a 5S.
I will have a decent look under the ST204 to check fuel tank position and look for any additional mounting holes.
I will also start looking seriously for a long ST205 rear cut for fuel tank and maybe floorpan. Any offers for delivery in less than 4 weeks? I can put one in the next container if I have no success in Oz (prefer Qld) but rather not wait the 8 weeks.
I will keep you informed of any progress and maybe someone can write a tutorial to show the rest of the world what we can do over in Oz when the job is complete.
