New car opinions - $35-40K on road
|

I'm after a new car (or less than 2yrs old, 2nd hand).
Criteria:
- large load capacity (needed for work)
- seats 5 people
- towing ability (1000Kg)
At the moment the choices are:
Mazda 6 wagon, Subaru Liberty 2.5i wagon, Nissan X-trail ST, Subaru Forester XS wagon.

The forester is a very nice car, possibly a commodore or falcon wagon of some description might fit the bill aswell.

the mazda 6 is a beautiful car, but I'm not convinced on it's towing ability. it would tow the 1000kgs, but you'd be looking at significantly decresed performance.
I hate to say it, but for that price range and the specs, a falcodoore would be a good choice

I'll second Draven, Beautiful Car (and I like the wagon shape)
The x trail would fit as well. I hired one for a weekend nice car.
No opinion on the others, but the Kluger may be out of you're price range

Look for an ex-fleet, V8-powered Falcodore wagon with all the "bits" and balance of new car warranty. For that kind of money, you should walk away with change...

im going to say subaru liberty 2.5i wagon. a family friend has an H6 and that is very nice so i imagine that the 2.5i four should be quite nice. and if you get really sick of the towing performance go out and build a b4 liberty motor.

I'm leaning heavily towards the Liberty atm.
I'm not into the local cars. I had a VT wagon for 2 years for work and it didn't impress me. A friend has an SS ute (VU?) and has had heaps of problems with it.
Mazda 6 is a very good-looking car, but underpowered.
Forester is still in there with a chance. It may even be a 2nd-hand turbo one.
Decisions, decisions.
Wish I had more money. (I can hear the "so do I"s from here)

Holden Rodeo 3.5 V6 dual cab.
They go like hot shit off a shiny shovel.
Carry 5 people and tow !
And they're not made by Holden (Isuzu I think!)
Cheers

Toyota Kluger. Beautiful car that.
If not, the liberty is pretty nice. We have one and they are beautiful to drive. However go for the Outback Limited. The extra 0.5L capacity will make a lot of difference

does it have to seat 5 all the time ?
Best bet here for that price range is an BA Xr6 Turbo, IMHO .. Seats 5 in relative comfort , can tow like a small semi , and buy yourself a decent trailer to go with it
if you need internal carrying capabiliyies with above mentioned criteria , Prado's seem very nice ..
if you dont need 4wd - ba falcon wagon all the way .. youll find the others will struggle in the towing departments, and this is where the falcon , though not as " technically advanced " excels by far ..
How many falcon wagons do you see towing boats/horsefloats/car trailers with lettle effort ..
PLUS youll save yourself 15K as the wagons are in the 20 - 25 K bracket now for a base XT. The 6 is plenty grunty to tow with - you dont need a 8 - but if an 8 is available - definantly look at it

I would say the legacy, just because i dont like 'compact' 4wds, and a 2l forester will get beaten by an 18rg.

I'm pretty sure both of those cost more than $35-40k onroad though. Even a standard Commodore would be pushing into those figures (new).

Couldn't help myself.
If all goes to plan, there's going to be a Black Forester XT Luxury in my garage by end of next week.
Was over 40, but I'll survive (I hope).
Hopefully, the TA22 won't be too neglected.
Thanks for the opinions.
