Oi!!! i just attempted to get rego on my car, and it passed inspection easy. Then they come back and say...This car didnt belong to the person that sold it to u when you bought it.
The rego' guys then told me that they have to do a search for the owner of the car, coz the chik that sold it to me didnt own it, and if they find the owner and if he/she wants the car back then reguarless of waht ive done to it i have to give it to them for free.
I was soo shocked...and 2moro the search will take place, and i ahve to wait 48 hours for a response before rego.
If i lose this car after all i done im gonna f***** kill some one hey im sooo pissed off. Worst of all i had no idea coz when i bought it it was unlicened, pile of shit. And now they trying to say i done all this work and about 3 grands worth, and they rekon i have to hand the car to someone for free if they want it?
Get fu**t ill smash em heY!!!
HELP!!! any good lawyers???

take both pieces of advice.
always use revs.
and if they say they do want it back, make damn sure you strip it to the bone

unless I was gonna strip it for parts, I would have revs checked it. Heard too many stories (ok, 2) of people getting badly burnt buying unchecked cars.

you may be lucky cause the owner may still think it is in the condition you bought it in! if so who would want that!
but another ra40 change the compliance plates over
hide the car until u hear from rta, then if they ask for it back make the fonecall! that gets it stripped

The only reason the Transport guys would have said this is if the car had been reported stolen, and was still listed as such on their computers. If this is the case, you don't have much of a chance, but you are able to keep all parts not originally included on the car, but must return all parts that were.

If i were in your position i would say thats fine. But you will return it in the condition you purchased it.. Pull out everything you have done. Take to it with a baseball bat if they say they want it back.
that is.. day tehy call and say its going to be picked up today as owner wants it back.. BASEBALL BAT. and a few friends. remove EVERYTHING.. That way owner gets what they had.. no what you have..
but its bullshit.. owner would have gotten the insurance money.. doubt they wold awnt it back anyhow..
Good luck.

thats an interesting point
if you buy a stolen car, and the original owner gets insurance money for it, whats the go?
does the insurance company now "own" the car?

If worst comes to worst, use one of the parts cars u had and put the comp plates on that, not like the owner would really want that back

dude that is totally weak, surely the owner would have to see your side of the story. there is no use taking to it with a baseball bat though, because then all your hard work is worth nothing. id say try reasoning with the owner, not everyone is a tight ass, considering your run i think your overdue for a bit of good luck.

if they manage to make successful contact with the original owner I am sure you can even work out a valuation with them based on pictures of the car's original condition. That is if they are any kind of human being.
At worst you are just up for a week or two's delay and a few hundred bucks (max) if the previous owner is nice.
if the insurance company comes to the party. well I hate to think. Show them the "bought condition" photos and let them make a call. Failing that take every removable panel off, the interior out, the engine out the windows out, heck, everything and give it back
Steve, this car is just a total work or art, I would be so "disillusioned with the Australian justice system" (the castle ) if you were not allowed to keep this car at the end of the day.
all the best of luck to you dude

I would just like to say to all the people who are suggesting stripping the car, what about the bodywork? That is where the real time money and effort has gone. A good body is worth twice what a good engine is worth.
My suggestion is to use the photos of the car's original condition and possibly even pay out more than it was worth when you bought it. Just make sure you are not put through the heartbreaking proceedure of pulling apart the artwork you spent ages creating.
Good luck.

Yes, everyone its tru! its mine. The lady that was doing the search and all that rigmarol, was taking soooo long. She had people queing up out the door of the joint and even then, she left the desk and went downstairs to check with her supervisor. Came back up and dad was just smiling at her wtih a bit of a giggle. She was pullin her hair out stressin about it and then just screamed out "AHHH forGET IT!" and she goes "Ill just licence the prick". I was nearly in tears laughing when i got out the door with my new plates n shit
funny as, Thanks for all the support, im sure it would have come in handy if worst had come upon me. Cheers guys, glad to be a part of the road worthy celica club

I'll relate a story.
3AM. Kid, 17, 150km from home in a car not registered to him. open highway, 100 down to 70 zone for rural costal town. Blow through doing about 90, two kilometers up the road the local police div. van from said township approaches from behind and lights up like a christmas tree.
Kid pulls over.
Cop one in van (driver, happens to be a lass) approaches kid, who gets out and stands aside the car.
Cop: How fast do you think you were going back there?
Kid: Through the town?
Cop: Yes.
Kid: About eighty I think.
Cop: Do you know the limit?
Kid: ... ..70?
Cop: Do you have any reason to be travelling that fast?
Kid: (shrugs tiredly) I'm sorry, no... I wasn't too focused I guess. My G/F is waiting for me in (two towns ahead)... .. (remember it's 3AM) what did you scan me at?
Cop: I didn't get you on the gun, you just looked to be going pretty quick... (can tell the kid is good but scared shitless) I appreciate your honesty, it's ok. This your car?
Kid: No, it's my mother's.... actually it'll be registered in my father's name.
Cop: Got your licence there?
Kid: (passes it over)
Cop: (sympathetic) It's okay, wait in the car, I'll just check this out (gestures with licence), no need to get cold....
# Cop returns to van, passes licence to officer inside...
# Quick torch check as officer checks the licence
# Cop collects licence from officer #2
# Returns to kid
# Returns licence and says...
Cop: All fine; just get your mum to get that faded numberplate looked at when you can ok?
Kid: ...ok.!
Cop: Take it easy out there, your girlfriend is waiting...
(walks away)
(Note: Kid is 17. Vic. licence isn't available until 18. Kid is wearing P plates, hands over Learner Permit at request for licence. Kid is shit-scared. Kid is so fukt, ie. driving unlicenced, 'borrowed the car'...etc. etc.)
All I can assume is that when the officer checked the licence (at 3AM) he just plugged the number into the computer and it returned 'No outstanding warrants, Not disqualified' and he handed it back without he or his partner recognising it was a learners permit and the kid was barely 17.
Pretty lucky kid...

CLG,
You said above that they would've only done this search if it was a vehicle of interest...how did you know this?
rx793,
Did you have a receipt for the car when you bought it, also did you sign a statulatory declaration when you got it registered?
I'm about to get my car sprayed, just want to make sure I don't end up in the same predicament as you!
