Hi all
Just wondering if anyone in our community knows of a good Australian datto 1200 ute -ish forum. The only reason im afraid to ask elsewhere is the flaming i may receive when they ask "what engine are you putting in it" ... blah blah.
Im a Toyota fan thru-and-thru you see ... and i have a spare 4AGZE + 614mm pully + T50 gbox sitting here ... I suppose my response to that question should be "brakes/suspension required for 1200 ute w/ 120ish kw)
All i require to get the unit on the road atm, is some serious modifications to the non existant sills... a fair bit of paint scraping, priming + small rust removal, new smaller steering wheel (so my lankyness can FIT IN THE CAR) some suspension work, a bench seat, some cheap stereo equip and a locked diff. Honest! Thats all! The body is actually pretty straight.
Thanx to our guy Eric at Indooroopilly, I can get some 215/50R13 tyres for my kidney/jelly bean rims from the TA23, so that is all sorted for roadworthyness
The plan would be to get the car going with the stock engine (although I havent tried starting it yet, if it goes, i _might_ have to invest in some wyns stop smoke for the Safety Cert) and restore/modify it at my leisure.
I paid $100 for two new sills, but dont really want to have a hack at welding them in myself - it's a big job. Anyone know a gig that actually does rust repair/panel beating these days ... As opposed to simply replacing panels and paint matching? Otherwise, this vehicle will be my first go at major rust repair, and at painting a whole vehicle (A litmus test for bodywork on the 1UZA28) Oh, btw, im looking for a good paint system to use, anyone have a recommendation?
Dont worry, the ute is just a work hack, the UZA 28 will still go forward, but I need a car to get around in, pick up UZA parts, and possibly to use for work (if i decide to go back)
Any help much appreciated toyota folks!!!

Sorry to drag up the old thread buuuut ....
thanx for the information rob_RA40, sideshow and twincam_ke20. I have been looking into it. Already got the sills just need to get some gas for my welder and a decent primer.
It runs!!!! Took the plugs out. mmm, rather new. In fact, the entire ignition seems pretty new. Hand cranked it for a bit with some WD40 down the cylinders (fair bit of rust in no2). Metho in the carb, and broooooom! off she went. Doesnt even blow smoke! (ok, maybe there's no oil in there (: )
What a buy, Im hopefull i can clean up the engine bay and get it on the road with the std engine. In my experience, it makes getting the legals for your modifications so much easier.
looking into the brakes, they are seriously shonky, but the handbrake is reliable enough to drive it around the block
4AGZE front cut is all disassembled, but the engine still needs some work before I consider putting it in. Dont really know which gearbox to use. I have a 4AGE sprinter gearbox here (T50?) but I really want a W58 setup.
Esteban!

Bluebird disc over drum rear brakes is a bolt up,only h/b cable will need shortening(b/bird cable).H165 diff came out in utes and is fairly tuff. Late model stanza struts and lower control arms with 120y caster rods will give a little more camber and hilux calipers with u12 pintara discs re-drilled to suit stanza hubbs. All offsets are correct exept bottom of caliper needs a couple of mm taken off so as not to foul the hat of the disc.Sunny booster and m/c is a nesesity to.Use std 1200 or after market front springs as stanza ones sit to tall.you can re-drill the LCA pivot hole in the cross member about 10mm outwards and up as much as pos if lowering ,and thread 10mm extra onto caster rods for more camber and caster, all this with decent shocks and it makes for a potent little pacage.Oh yea, a 120y sway bar is a 3mm upgrade to. All of this is cheap and easy.I did it all to my coupe and would have cost me around $500 .BTW, as you are planing to mod youre crossmember, Ide sell the ute one and use a std 1200 one as the ute ones (after 1975)allow you bolt a14 and a15 straight into a 1200 and I have heard of people paying up to $150 for them.

SILLY??????
Dato 1200 utes kick ass!!!!
I wish i still had mine
Put stanza struts in the front and stanza disks on the back, throw in a ca18t,4agze,or 4agte and off you go
If you use the stanza struts and brakes you wont be ale to run a wheel smaller than a 15. Oh yeah, and run a 45 series tyre on the front so when you turn the wheels you dont pull the front guards in. I had that problem but then again mine was as low as i could get it.
Long live the Datto!!!!!
